    FC3 Multiplayer - MSV-Gearhead at your service

    Heyoo,

I'm Gearhead (that's my "internet name") and I work at Massive in Sweden as a Comdev (that makes me UbiTim's viking counterpart in the north).

As you all know, Massive is currently working hard on creating the multiplayer part of FarCry 3 and I'm here to:

    - Get to know you guys
    - Hear your thoughts on FarCry 3 multiplayer

And maybe, just maybe, answer a couple of questions while I'm at it to!

It's nice to meet you all,

    Cheers

    Hi Garhead

    My name is Steven
    Xbox Fallen Champ
    PSN Sizzling_Sar

    I live in England

I am part of a site called fcmaps.net which has been on the go around 6 years now, The site owner Taylor created the site back on Far Cry Instincts - he did not have Xbox Live and wanted people to upload their maps and share them so that he could play them in LAN Games, I got more involved when Far Cry Instincts Predator came out and the site evolved from there.

We had a lot of members leave the scene with Far Cry 2 (I also struggled at times with that game in multiplayer but enjoyed the campaign, however I could not keep away very long - The Editor is the big draw) so I am still mapping mainly on PS3

Our site covers map uploads, comments, interviews, tutorials and other stuff but it has been difficult with FC2 because so many people left.

Check out some of the maps in this area of the Forum called Mappers Creativity

We have a new site in the works that has been taking a long time to put together because the owner / programmer is busy 24/7 with his work and home life - I actually have some questions reference websites and map uploads, I will get to that (sorry about the long post but you said you want to get to know us)

    Far Cry 3
Single player looks amazing, I know there is a lot more to see and I am sure there will be more surprises but it looks in safe hands.

    Multiplayer
I like the speed of the character when on foot and in water, sFC2 was very slow paced (agonising at times) so thanks for cranking the speed up.
The game seems to be a lot more indepth than I had imagined with these Battle Cries having different Tiers (combining them with the right class seems to have good results)

Team Support, I was a little concerned at first because I hated the helicopters and planes always hovering around in COD but it seems that you have addressed that and the Team Support should be fun.

Cling To Life - I hope this worked because maybe 5 - 10% of people heal others in FC2, The reason is because it is a sequence and you can not defend yourself or snap out if you come under attack - I think that now we just run over and press a ****on which injects them and they get up quicker - plus by healing the team gets more XP so that could work a lot better than in FC2 (I Hope)

Weapons having attachments / modifications and the customize a class should work very well - It will keep people happy I am sure.

    Multiplayer Modes
Only 4 modes is not a lot, FireStorm sounds great and I am sure Domination will be good - I hear there is Team Death Match and one other mode as yet not talked about - My guess is that it will be something new, but I have to say I am disappointed that so far Capture The Flag has not been confirmed, I wonder if DLC can be added at a later date with team modes?

Also the ability to manipulate those Nodes from Domination would help us so much in creating our own game modes (something people have always done in Far Cry games)

    Vehicles
I am sure you are already aware that the majority would like to get the ability to put vehicles in their own User Made Maps - I know we have seen interviews that say it will not happen in Multiplayer but if there is any way a new game mode could be created just for maps with vehicles then I am sure it would be appreciated - Even if it is after the games release and would be a form of DLC = If it can't happen then I understand.

    Level Editor
We seem to have news filtering around that the map editor grid will be a lot smaller (or maybe we are thinking this because some interviews and previews are saying maps are smaller in size)

Some questions I would love to know which are editor related are these.
1.Will we be forced into using your templates which we then make into our own maps (as an example what they do in Forge) or can we manipulate terrain and start with a blank canvas in the editor like FC2?

    2. Do consoles have any form lighting in the editor to add into our maps?

    3. So far I have not seen ladders, are they included and if so are they better than the ones in FC2 because on those you had to press the interact ****on and could not jump off to other platforms / ledges.

    4. If I were to design a user made map in the form of a DOOM style corridoor map (all enclosed) there would be no way to drop the psych gas or the fire barrels into the play area - Would this be an issue if I wanted to create something like that, it would still play wouldn't it?

    5. The horrible see through and invisible pieces in the editor from FC2 (when you look underneath them) have you done anything with those or are items the same in FC3?

    6. OCC (Occlusion) Blocks are these still needed in the editor?

    7. The draw distance with a lot of objects in FC2 was poor on consoles (I can't speak for the PC version) yet things like colonial fences and the concrete blocks had a good draw distance, IMO it was awful moving and seeing creations appear and disappear because of the render rate / draw distance.

    8. I imagine that the PC Editor will have so much more than the one on consoles so speaking for PS3 and 360 would it be possible for you to get a top map from one platform working on the other or is it not currently possible.

    9. Is the multiplayer and editor upgradable to take DLC - (will you guys be making more maps and giving us new items and terrain paint n stuff for the editor because I think the majority would want that)

    10. No One seems to know what is going on with these Pre Order special bundles, So far they say Lost Expeditions - Predator and Warrior pack, they all have different stuff, can you say if there will be a version that will have everything or a way to get everything as DLC if someone was willing to pay for it?

    11. The map rating system that you speak of - Far CRy can be a jealous game at times unfortunately and some people can often rate a very good map with a poor score on purpose, how would you guys stop this from happening, I don't think there is an answer.

    12. Are you aware of the Escape & Course maps that some players have been making throughout the Far Cry games, basically like a Get To The End or Escape the complex type map where the idea is not to kill but to go through a sequence of puzzles / jumps and navigate through a course until you reach the end - These have been popular for a long time, some love them and others hate them, What are your opinions?

    13. Someone from Massive mentioned forums and again in an online preview it was mentioned that there might be some form of social networking with the editor, Is this similar to Halo Forge where maps can be queued online and then downloaded when you start the game, (what is the system you are going with for Map Uploads / Downloads)

    14. Does the time of day change and weather conditions while a match is playing in multiplayer or can it be locked to stay the same?

    15. Is there any form of COOP in the map editor where more than 1 person can edit a map?

    16. Will we get to place ziplines in a user made map?

    17. The Tattoo Editor - Can we only tattoo the arms or can we go crazy and do something from the movie The Hangover (like Mike Tyson) can we also tattoo the face?
For anyone that has not yet read there will be a tattoo editor in the game which has small designs that can be joined up to create your own mauri styled designs for your character.

    18. Any other form of player customization? (I notice in some pictures that players have satchels / ammo belts across their chest and backpacks)

Sorry there are so many questions, I could ask so many more - I also understand that NDA might prevent you from answering the majority but that is what myself and I am sure some others would like to know.

Thanks for your time and for coming forward in these forums, I look forward to seeing / playing the game.

    Cheers

Sorry Gearhead - I have one more thing I would like to point in your direction which I believe would help us out, Hopefully you guys have already included something.

In the Far Cry 2 Editor we had no way of knowing how high terrain would be when raising lowering, we had numbers (I guess simulating meters high) but it was generally guess work, now on the older versions of Far Cry on console we had the Terrain Indicator as seen in the video above, you can see how quick it is to lower and raise terrain and get it to the height you require at the press of a ****on.

Also lining up objects in FC2 was a pain.

We had to hope that we could flip the item slowly but often on a large complex structure it could run out slightly, in that video we had a Rotate Object by 45degrees which always lined things up perfectly, something like that would be amazing in FC3 and make editing so much quicker and easier for everyone.

I also wanted to point out that a lot of map makers on FC2 used the OCC Blocks to block out the sun, this blocked out shadows (on most) objects and helped the performance slightly in the map because the shadows were no longer changing as the time of day moved, the down side is that the map would be bright and often did not look quite right.

You can see some of the OCC Blocks at the top of the picture below which covers the entire map layout.

    19. This is a huge question for us map makers - Can we lock out a map to prevent others from editing and stealing the map as their own, In FC2 people could steal a map and it left the original creators name on the map - This was frowned upon by the community and is something we don't really want - It would be nice to swap edits of maps and allow others to use them if we allow it but at the same time to lock out a map if desired - A simple Tick Box lock map Yes No would be all that is required, Could you see us getting this option?

    20. Is it possible for users to have Waterfalls in their maps (are they available in the editor) That question has been doing the rounds for years - something players have always wanted that and water at different levels.

The pic above is an example of the waterfalls from an Ubisoft map on FCIP maybe 5 years ago.

Below a waterfall scene in FC2 (Are there any in the multiplayer maps you guys have created in FC3)

That is an example of an Escape Type map below.

Some players make custom built signs, It would be nice to have some way of having letters and designs and stuff for maps but I think on the 360 platform Microsoft might put a block on as they seem to be weary of law suits because of content from these editors and user made maps - Where Sony seem fine and more relaxed with User Created Content.

The letters were made using those arrows above turned on their side - so much quicker with letters pre-made in the editor.

    Terrain Skins

The left one was modded, the one on the right was made using a load of items - It would be nice to have some stuff like that available as a terrain paint because Far Cry has a lot of maps that are outside the box, stuff in space and futuristic looking - It is an insane game and people like to out do each other with these maps, it can be fun and competitive between some of the guys.

    BOTS
There has been a lot who talk about having Bots in their maps.

    Split Screen
This pops up every time there is a Far Cry game - some want split screen multiplayer.

(Only 10 images allowed in a post unfortunately - sorry but I have a little more to include)

Here is an example of how creative some of these map makers are.

That Dragon is made from the green plant pots in the FC2 Editor, you can even go inside the dragon.
So whoever the editor team are - could you ask them to just go crazy and get into it as many items as they can, some also having neat edges so that they will lock in well with other items without always having sticking out pieces.

Here are some examples from the FC2 Editor

The item above was one of the best bits for creating walls and floors / ceilings in the FC2 Editor (Concrete block o3 I think it was called)
The issue is that this has a silly lip around the edge of one side that serves no purpose, things like that would be better off been totally flat on both sides, the item was solid and did not seem to vanish at distance, But it would also be great to get a few similar in thickness and colour pieces that are maybe triangle and semi circular which would fit up against this item to create something else.

Here is an example of the hollow items from FC2s editor.

I could understand with the big buildings and stuff but the smaller pieces often get used for custom built creations and it can be difficult at times when tilting them if they are hollow.

Here is an article I did on Ladders / Waterfalls / Weather / Caves - Click Here

Can you see Massive Entertainment getting involved with the User Created Maps - do you think we will bump into you guys at times online? With FC2 they sort of released and run - apart from the dreadful DLC Pack and the Update Patch we only had Kimi the Community Developer to interact with I think the team disbanded and did a runner.

I think that's about it Gearhead - I have loads more endless info so if you ever get bored just fire some stuff our way - If you can answer any questions then that's brilliant - If not I understand.

Just remember Far Cry is nothing normal - people do some crazy stuff in the editor and others just like chilling out, that is one of the reasons why people will be so angry about the vehicles been removed, it was often the norm to enter a match to find people walking around looking at stuff created in the editor or people just riding around having fun on strange maps, Its a crazy game.

I am really glad you guys have added a lot of colour into the game, Far Cry 2 was very dull with lots of brown / grey - and murky water, it set the African Theme very well but most terrain paint was similar - It got old pretty quick with the items, the map Sub Pen looks great and I briefly spotted a bad quality Image of Temple which looked interesting - 10 Maps they are saying will ship with the game.

    Thanks Again.

Hi Gearhead, I'm glad to see two ComDevs included in the Far Cry 3 discussion now!

Just to keep it short and sweet, my names Flashify or simply Flash (that's my internet name ).

I absolutely love the look of 3's multiplayer so far, you've nailed everything visually, the guns look awesome (I'm especially loving the P416 so far), the map Sub Pen from what I've seen has a great layout and everything in general looks great! When I saw a hand-grenade explosion, I was just like "holyyy sh..." haha.Looks proper realistic and explosive, can't wait to see the effects of them if you were to throw them in the water.

Personally, I do not care that vehicles won't be in multiplayer, I mean I've been playing Far Cry 2 recently and no one ever uses them anyway. So I think that you've made a good choice on that one, keep the action pace flowing.

The only question I have is: When can we see more?!

So yeah, keep it up, looks great - don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

    Hello Gearhead,

I too have been around the Farcry scene for many years now, and I'm glad to see such interaction with the actual Devs appearing on this forum.

I may have some inquiries in the near future...but, it seems that my friend Lambchop has it all pretty well covered already...lol

I think he's been a great asset to this community from the very first time it was created, and he has concerns just like the rest of us.

I also look forward to some insight into some of his questions.

    Thanks,

    mambo

    Hi Gearhead,

nice to meet you here. I´m sure the multiplayer of Far Cry 3 is great, I´ve no doubts, because you did already a great job on World in Conflict and Massgate.

Hey there Gearhead! after Lambchop's article, I will keep it short and sweet saying that the work so far has got me hooked to the game and I cannot wait. I also have a question that I don't think you can answer (Will terrain editing be back in the Map Editor?)
