I've started the Russain campaign, first time, and we are flying these tin cans called I-16 Type 24s. After escorting the bombers we were attacked by 109s. I legged it!! Could a I-16 really face off a 109?? My flying skills are quite poor so maybe this campaign is not the best to start with??
Yes an I-16 can in the right hands mess with Me109s and even Fw190s.
I assume you are flying a DGen campaign? If so before generating your campaign, you will be given a list of start points. Giving a location, year, and aircraft type. Click on the aircraft and a small list of planes available for that part of the campaign will appear. Hope this helps.

Yes, definitely against the 109E, and even against the 109F if flown correctly. The I-16 can out-turn and out-roll both of them at any altitude, and can out-climb them below 2000m (though out-climbing AI planes might be tough since they don't overheat and fly perfectly trimmed).Originally Posted by blazer-glory Go to original post
Don't try chasing 109's, you will never catch them, climb instead at a speed of 210km/h. Then when they come back into the fight you will hopefully have and altitude advantage that you can trade for speed with a dive. Climb whenever you have a spare moment.
If you are attacked by them make sure you face them, put them at your 11 or 1 o'clock a little above you, and then turn into them, across and below their path; they won't be able to follow.
Don't pull too hard on the stick, the I-16 turns so well that you don't need to pull as hard as possible to out-turn a 109, especially an AI 109. Also, try to turn at speeds above 280km/h until you get more familiar with it, at low speeds it's a bit unsteady and snap-stalls. Luckily it recovers from a stall quickly and by itself.
To shoot a 109 down you will need to find one below you or one that's distracted shooting at your comrades; if you find one that is aware of you and has same altitude as you then he will extend away easily.
Also, you can turn fuel mixture to 120% up to an altitude of ~3000m, I think it gives you a tiny bit of extra boost and/or cooling. And remember to switch to supercharger stage 2 at 3000m as well.
