I am afraid you put yourself in a hard spot there by buying the very latest ATI card.
I think this is a driver problem. ATI already has a bad reputation amoungt IL-2 players for that.

All I can think of you can do is send feedback to AMD/ATI that your card's drivers do not play nice with IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 and hope that they will correct the driver in the future.

OOlder drivers might not recognize the card.

You do not need to remove driver remnants with a cleaner as long as you stick to the same brand. They will download/install to the same location(s) overwriting what is already there.

Max - that's what I'm reckoning, it will get worked out but at least I'm flying Cliffs of Dover with everything on high settings. But I do miss the Eastern Front.

CoD is great and getting better. The problem is that IL-2 Sturmovik uses an old OpenGL version. Later OGL versions are not backward-compatible.

As an afterthought, Maybe Optimized drivers from http://NGOHQ.com may work for your card. Try from tomorrow, they are protesting SOPA/PIPA today for 24h like many other sites.

Saw a post at Rage3D so am assuming that's you.

Here are a few suggestions related to possible user error, which does occur.

Recheck that your launch short cut to the straight install is correct. Its easy to overlook and it does happen more than you think.

For a time, an atioglxx.dll file was placed in the game directory to solve game issues. Do you have one? It may not agree with the new drivers and you may have simply forgotten its there.

Just for fun, try running the game in DirectX instead of OGL and see if you get a launch.

Since AMD and ATI are partners, you could also post there seeking tech help. And of course, UBI does have a tech help desk that's more than worth a try.

I was going to suggest that too. I ran into the same issue, from back when the blocky text was a problem with ATI cards and the earlier .dll was being used to sort it out. At some point last year this started to interfere with the newer Catalyst drivers. It was causing CTDs after a short while on-line with a 5870

Partial solution. I had the atioglxx.dll in my folder to solve AA problems from older drivers. I removed the file. The game launches to 60% load, then CTDs. I had another chap in Rage3D respond to me and states that he is not having any problems. Attempted setting to directx but with the same results of 60% load then CTD. We are getting there.

Resolved: change config.ini HardwareShaders= setting from 1 to 0. When I changed it before to 0, nothing happened so I figured that I still wanted "perfect setting" and changed it back to 1.

Lesson for new Radeon 7000 series cards: HardwareShaders=0, remove atioglxx.dll file from your folder if you had it there to fix previous problems with ATI driver AA.

    Good hunting everyone

thank you all for your help

Eww, that's not an ideal solution. HardwareShaders=0 turns off perfect mode and lowers the graphics quality considerably. It may still be like the others said, just need ATI to fix the OGL drivers for the new cards, but generally a CTD at 60% is mod related, specifically a bad buttons file or air.ini or something like that. When you say the stock install, do you mean a completely stock install in another folder, or just mods turned off in mod enabler? This might be worth fiddling with some more to get perfect mode back.

I will reinstall Il-2, make a second clean copy, then test clean versus clean with mods within its folder. It return with results. thanks Urufu

Urufu - as always, I salute you for your wisdom. Clean version patched through 4.11 did load with HardwareShaders=1. So it was an issue with turning on / turning off mods
