All this talk about Mama San's have given me very strange dreams...i woke up at 4 am and have been awake since....i was dreaming about my grand father and mama san's...when I woke up i had a distante memory of some sort of event from my childwood wich i could not quiet put my finger on...
It just came to me so this is how it goes...
or what I remember which is not very much.
sometime after WWII my granfather was a sea captain abord a merchant, he sailed out of S. Francisco to somewhere in asia, my mother was a few years old and he had just divorced my grandmother wich was a big thing back then in a Catholic country like Portugal...so he decides to go on a binge somewhere in Asia...I DO NOT REMEMBER WHERE...to my exasperation...and he gets as drunk as a sailor can get...when he wakes up some 2 days later he's in the house of a local Moma Son that has been taking care of him, aparently her son has found him with a cracked head and only wearing his boxer shorts all his documents and clothes or otherwise wordly posessions are gone, the Moma Son get him some new clothes and gives him money for a cab back to the ship...my grandfather wanted to pay her but has he had nothing he made an IOU and gave it to her with his address in Portugal...as thing's go time goes by and the incident fades away just like one of many adventures on a distant shore...one day many years later he receives a letter from the Moma Son, because of some tragedy in her familly she needs him to pay her back, she wants nothing more then the money for the cab wich was i think 3 US Dollars nevertheless my grandfather sent her 100$ US AND that was a lot of doe back then...I remember my granfather saying that this particular Moma Son was like an angel to all sailors in trouble and that a few other sailors on his ship had sent money to her when they heard she was in trouble...she used to aproach the ships comimng to the harbour in a small boat selling stuff to the sailors, has my grandfather told me she had some children and no husband...and this is all I remember about her or the story.
BUT i DO remember being a kid and being with my grandfather on a lunch with other sea captains and they were talking about this moma Son, and they were saying that something bad had happen to her or her familly and that sailors from all over the world had sent money to help her, some even had gone to her personaly to pay not only a debt of gratitude but to help in the same measure that she had helped them for aparently my grandfather was not the only sailor in need that she had helped...
I allready phoned the family lawyer in Portugal and my Mom this morning to try to find the letter she sent to my grandfather... i really would like to know more about this all story...unfortunatly this is all I can remember...
SO if you guys come across any info please let me know, idd really like to get to the bottom of this to see if its just sea lore of a real thing
