I have just tried to install pacific fighters on my winxp machine, and it won't even start the game - says it can't find the cd in the drive - is there a known issue with this?

yes, this is very well known.

It can be troubling for newer users, we get probably three or four of these new posts a week.

its linked to the rts.dll file.

    go here:

    http://www.airwarfare.com/guides/patching.htm

and have a dig around, this may not be the exact target.

best look everywhere on this site and try a bit of trial and error if you dont get it straight away.

the info is in there, i fixed mine with it.

It has to do with the copy protection on the Pacific Fighters CD. PF usually won't run, sometimes won't even install, from a CD-RW unless you ininstall your RW software. Once installed, the replacement rts.dll smooths things out considerably.

make sure you have no copy software such as clonecd installed or any virtual drives

if still having problems check airwarfare guide or post in community help as suggested above
