If the entire line of info for the server is "greyed out" then either the ping is too high to matter to you or the game server is behind a firewall that hasn't opened up the proper ports.
If the name of the server is in it's normal color but the rest of the information is greyed out, your IP has been banned from that server. Sometimes this happens by accident, even on your own server. Don't ask me how I know this.![]()
I just found out that the server I mentioned above (the aussie gamearena server #3 which comes up with a 9999 ping and ???) which was blacked out on the list, is a server ONLY for people who are subscribed to 'telstra bigpond internet' (which is our countrys major tele-communications company)
Pretty sure its something to do with free downloads/extra badwidth...
I have had a similar problem. My friends and I have constant problems getting punk buster to work properly, so we usually just play without it (among friends, there's no need). When I make a server without pb enabled, they see my server as "unkown" and greyed out, even when they have pb disabled themselves. If I enable pb, they can see the server.
In order to get a game going without pb, I have to start the server with pb, have them find it on the list, and then disconnect and restart it without pb. Since it's accessible on the list, they can connect at that point provided they didn't refresh in between. It's quite an ordeal.
It doesn't seem to happen when one of them is hosting. Only when I do. Anyone else have this problem?

whats-the-deala-ya'll!... we only have three aussie servers and ones blacked out!

#3 is behind a firewall, you need to launch farcry with COGS to get it to show up.
