    Hi skippers!

I just got myself SHIII and it should arrive within a few days. I've been browsing around to answer some of my questions, but I want to clarify a few points. (Please don't harpoon me if these are silly/obvious )

On starforce - apparently this is bad for my machine. I understand that some versions of the game carry it, while others do not. How will I know if mine does (I imagine there will be a prompt on install)? How can I make sure I can remove starforce if it gets installed?

On patches - I understand I only have to download 1.4b as it includes all other updates. Is this true?

On Mods - I've heard of a few mods already, namely Grey Wolves, etc. What mods are out there, what do you recommend, and what should be the order of installation? If mods come in a pack, like Grey Wolves, can I cherry-pick which features I want installed? If so, will this affect online play?

Online play - does anyone still play? I imagine they do, but I suspect that mods may make it hard to join.

Map scale - Ok this is a weird one. I read that the map is out of scale in that it's too large compared to everything else. Is this true? and if so, why?

    Thanks for your help!

-Just- bought the Direct2Drive no starfarce version and only see patches going up to 1.3.

My PC is too weak to run SH4 which I bought over a year ago but on advice I give this a try for my $10.

Did not use their downloader and waiting to see when/where the activation key goes in. Training school started Nav mission without it.

EDIT: Good thing I read this thread, now getting Download US 1.4b....

Where's the stickies with the basic info? New people do play SH3?

Hey Gunz, maybe we can learn together!

    The published recommended specs are:

    2Ghz CPU, 1Gb RAM, 128Mb video.

I have 1.73Ghz dual core, 2Gb RAM, and an Intel mobile chip-set which I think is 256Mb. It runs Il-2 well and has handled transparent water and reflections in Track Mania (although at lower FPS). I am assuming mine will handle SH3 ok-ish. If not - well, it was $8 grand total...

I was considering SH4 as well, but apparently this game is just as good, so I thought I'd give it a go. If it works well, I may buy SH4.

I'm glad you found the patches and that yours doesn't have any "extra" software to worry about. Here's to hoping my copy doesn't either.

There are a couple stickies at the top, but I wanted to confirm/supplement the info that was or wasn't there. (I just need a little moral support! )

For instance, the top sticky tells me how to remove Starforce, but preferably, I would like to install the game while bypassing Starforce completely.

BTW, I blame the Das Boot soundtrack. If I hadn't heard it, I probably wouldn't have bought the game

One of the first things I did was shut the music off, LOL!

Running a Sempron 2600, 2G RAM and GF 7600GS 512M video here. Nav training running smooth, now if only I could figure out just WHERE they want me to go. Head SSE, enter the channel, navigate the channel then... I've tried different ways/directions as there's lots of channel there and so far can only complete step one. Some map markers would be nice, now going to look for posts.

The US patch didn't work for my D/L and what's worse informed me it was going to patch me from v1.0 to 1.3. Errrrr?
I also see no indication anywhere in-game of what version I am running. Just tried the Euro 1.4b patch and no luck there.

Things I don't notice: in-game resolution changer though it looks okay anyway. No in-game way to reassign keys.

Apparently there is a bug in which installing 1.4 still shows 1.3. You might be OK.

Your sub is always marked by the circle with a tick, with the tick facing "backwards". It's basically a GPS, tracking your location perfectly. If you use the plotter tool (triangle thingy on your map) you can plot waypoints and the ship will follow.

As I understand, there is no way to reprogram the keys. This is disappointing.

I know this can be done - it is in one of the many user-editable configuration files, but I'm not sure where. I don't have SH3 installed at the moment (won't run on my netbook), but I'm sure someone will know where it is.

I expect with SH3 being given away free with CloD, there will be quite a few newcomers to this forum - perhaps someone could sort out a thread with a few tips and links, as finding info here can be a little difficult if you don't know what you are looking for.

    EDIT - found it:

The file you need is SH3 "data\Cfg\Commands_en.cfg"

I changed the 'Fire_torpedo' command from Key0=0x0D,,"Enter" to Key0=0x0D,c,"Enter" to prevent me accidentally launching torpedoes - the command is now "Ctrl-Enter"

    SetKeys1.3

Latest versions of the game are not 'starforced'.

    Rightclick SH3.exe in rootfolder
(install into C:\games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\... or similar - NOT default installation path!)
    Choose 'Properties'
Tab 'Details' reads the version of the installed game -> 1.4.0.1 is patched to 1.4b

The map is projected on a cylinder - not on a globe. This streches the map when sailing north or south from the equator and maximizes in the polar regions. It's no real problem for gameplay.

For navigation training - simply follow orders.
Use the compass to turn to SSE and move this direction.
    Dive and steer as ordered.
Surface when ordered and move on straight until the mission ends.

There is a little glitch in the sequence - simply sail on...

Two major things to learn in this game: patience and fuel management.
    Best speed: 1/3 ahead.

    Thanks for the help.

The reason I ask about Starforce is that I may have gotten an older, yet still unopened copy. We'll see.

Regarding map projection - was that done intentionally? Is there fix (making the game world round)?

Thank you very much to the helpers, a little info can go a long way. Now I know why the patch won't install, what I bought from D2D is already 1.401! I wonder when it's going to need activating? Maybe when I get past training exams?

    Well I did register!

Now I start to look into necessary mods, etc. Little Grey Wolves?
