    This is the account of the two pilots who got strafed in the car and later took off in P40s to fight the attacking japanese planes.

    Apparently, Welch couldnt get the highest military award because he had taken off without proper authorization and could therefore not be awarded the Nation's highest military award; the award was downgraded to a Distinguished Service Cross.

    LOL, sounds as if his boss could've been the american equilant of G├┬Âring.

    Welch was a true natural fighter pilot, scoring in multiples most of the times he made contact with the enemy (in fact, his next contact came on 7 Dec 1942, when he took down three Japanese planes flying a P-39). Unfortunately, he contracted malaria & had to be sent home, or he might well have ended up being America's "Ace of Aces."

    "Welch remained in the Pacific Theater of Operations and went on to score 12 more kills against Japanese aircraft (16 in total). After the war, he became the chief test pilot for North American Aviation, makers of a long line of successful fighters that began with the P-51 Mustang, generally recognized as the best fighter of any air force in World War II. Welch began testing the prototype P-86 (later redesignated F-86) Sabre, a new jet fighter which combined the aerodynamic advances of the propeller-driven Mustang with the lessons of swept-wing research the Germans had developed for their jet aircraft toward the end of the war. "
