It is unlikely that you killed the CPU if you are able to post. Now thermal protection shutoff or unstable power to the board become more likely.
I have run into a number of customers using the cheap Branded-500w PSU's with multiple 12v rails having similar problems.
I suggest finding a friend that wants to loan you a healthy PSU with 38amps/12v on a single rail or 2x20amps/12v on a dual rail. See if this corrects the problem.
I'm offically an idiot.
The whole stems back to the cooler that got knocked loose, that i did not know about when i stared this process.
Whwn i refitted that, i took off the mobo power connector as it was getting in my way - i never out it back, so i blamed the PSU.....
I was starting to suspect the PSU, so the moment it wouldn't "post" that was that, a comedy of errors, from start to finish.
Only a casual glance inside my case led me to notice that i had not replaced the 4 pin mobo power connector.....
I was just about ready to RMA my PSU.....
It's fine so far, just can't get the new drivers on.
I've tried removing then thru control panel, and installing the forceware's 162.22 but it gets halfway thru and crashes.
My driver currently is:
7.15.11.6222
Dated 06/07/2007
Yep suspiciously like the 162.22, but the date is wrong.
It's idling at 68C - that's not good, warm day though.
Good to hear its running again...
CPU or GPU?It's idling at 68C - that's not good, warm day though.
Could be normal for 8800GTS on a warm day.
(Mine's idling at 60C currently)
Have you tried to remove the drivers in safe mode? Might help. Looks like there's remnants left that are blocking the installation of the newer ones? (Does DriverCleaner run on Vista?)

It's now at 65C (GPU), and crashed a minute or so into 3DMARK, same old story, total shutdown.
I haven't got drivercleaner.
I'll try removing the old drivers in safe mode.

Thanks for that.
The CPU temp was out of control again, so i tried to fit the cooler again, and i did that, it's rock solid and doesn't move, so it must be contacting the chip?
Just back to square 1 again now. After 10 hours i'm exactly where i was, sat with a PC that won't even post.
I'm going to get drunk.
Just tested my gaming rig again (after a long break), it lasted 15 secs before shutting itself off.
Anyone have a clue here? the fan fires up, the Cooler seems very solid and locked in, i think i've pretty much ruled out the GPU and PSU now.
I'm sure its the GPU the temps were always fine until i decided to take the cooler off and do little housekeeping with dust, however many attempts i have at refixing it the cooler seems not too function.
Note to self - NEVER arse about with applallingly badly designed Intel cooler when you don't really need too, it was fine before, but since it doesn't cool at all.
Deflated and a little drunk.
Wolfman.
You removed/refitted the CPU heatsink, what did you clean it with and what are you using as a thermal paste?
Not familiar with current Intel heatsinks, with AMD they only fit one way.
Have you fitted it correctly?
Again does your BIOS have a system health section where you can see the CPU temp and voltages?

I didn't realise i had to "clean" it, i just cleared the dust out, and put it back, as far as i know the cooler is fitted correctly, it's locked down in all four corners and doesn't move all the four pins have been pushed thru the mobo locked thru the other side.
It sounds like i might have to remove the paste on the chip and cooler and apply some more, i can get some of that artic silver stuff delivered and try that? how would you remove the paste that's already been applied?
Yep, i can check temps thru bios and thru ntune, but my PC doesn't stay on long enough to get that far.....
It's had all night to cool down, i'm going to try and see what's happening with the CPU temp.
