I've installed drivers from the disc and restarted as instructed and my PC switches off after i sign into Vista.
It's powered up, seated correctly, PSU etc can handle it, there are no compatbility issues with my PC at all.
I can't get the latest drivers onto my gaming rig as this PC's drives do not work, so i can't put them onto a disc.
Does anyone have any ideas? Man this is getting old after RMA'ing a 7950GT last week.
I wanted to get back into PC gaming and so far after nearly five months i've been using a faulty GPU, and now the replacement doesn't work - i'm starting to think i'm wasting my ****ing time. I've spent more time troubleshooting that playing anything my PC is capable of, first the RAM slots don't work causing BSOD's, that took a couple of weeks to diagnose as i had no clue after so long away, then the GPU is faulty, now the 8800GTS won't work.
Wolfman.
Can you boot into safe mode OK?
Did you un-install the 7950 first, remove all nVidia display drivers?
For safe mode:
If you need it.

No i didn't i just took the GT out the case....i didn't know i had to uninstall it, i don't have a drive cleaning program either.....
No, i can't even get into safe mode anymore
Will my PC boot without a GPU present? i guess not
Now that's weird, as that's not driver related.Originally posted by FoolTrottel:
You sure PSU can handle it?
Are them extra power connectors connected okay?

Thus must be hardware related... loose wire on CPU cooler? (Dunno, just a guess...) </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Extra power connectors?
It's on a 6 pin PCI-E. Does it need more than that?
My PSU is SLI certified it's got 4 18A 12V rails.
The CPU cooler wires look fine.

Can you boot into the BIOS OK, and what does the health monitoring say re temps and volts?
It's NOT the card.
First up, my cooler had got knocked loose, checking as you said, my CPU was hitting 70C, but...was that causing the shutdowns, or was it the PSU dying?
I put the cooler back as it should be, thinking i had found the problem when i hit the on button, my PC fired up for a around a second and then died. I tried repeatedly, with the same the result.
What do you think? I've either killed the CPU, or the PSU has in actual fact been slowly shuffling off this mortal coil over the last couple of weeks, today being the final nail in the coffin.
Oh man, i just get dumber by the minute - this is what happen when you've had about 8 good hours sleep in 72.
When putting the cooler back securely i unplugged the 4 pin mobo connector and put it out the way - yep, you guessed it, i didn't put it back.....
Here goes.
Fired up? Does this mean you can POST and get to the desktop?
It is unlikely that you killed the CPU if you are able to post. Now thermal protection shutoff or unstable power to the board become more likely.
I have run into a number of customers using the cheap Branded-500w PSU's with multiple 12v rails having similar problems.
I suggest finding a friend that wants to loan you a healthy PSU with 38amps/12v on a single rail or 2x20amps/12v on a dual rail. See if this corrects the problem.
