Hope this isn't a re-post. R.I.P. Fess Paker. Turned down for Navy Flight School at 6'6" tall he later joined the Marines only to miss combat because of the Bomb. Before he became Davey Crockett or Danial Boone I remember his small role in the SciFi classic "Them" as a pilot who cracked up dodging flying ants. He was an icon and from all accounts, a genuine person who didn't let the adoration of generations of kids go to his head.
He will be missed.

Yeah, I saw this in the news last week unfortunately. I would always wait with anticipation when I saw that 'Davy Crockett' would be scheduled on Walt Disney on the following Sunday in the 'TV Guide'. I remember all the boys at school would be waiting for it as well, and we'd all be talking about it and singing the song at recess and lunch. Also this was happening 10-15 years after it premiered in 1955, just to show how strong an impression the show series made.
Heck, I'll bet that most here on the forum wouldn't pass it up to sit down and watch a 'Davy Crockett' and 'Daniel Boone' marathon if given the chance.![]()
Maybe some of us older guys from that era would watch but I doubt "we" represent the majority here anymore. Unfortunately.Originally posted by Messaschnitzel:

And even though I don't remember it, I was given a coonskin cap that were all the rage back then. Always wondered what happened to it.
Hope it didn't look like some of these. Some of them look like a butt kickin' waiting to happen.

He was a man of great stature to me,I can remember being around 4 y.o.,at the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo, with my 8x10 glossy they were selling(of course,my parents bought).
All the kids were crowding the rail, and I was there as he rode around the outside of the rodeo arena, finally he came to us,and first looked me straight in the eye, signed it,gave it back with a friendly smile again looking right in my eyes,he did all the kids that way.
I've long lost that picture, but I have the memories of Davy Crockett looking straight into my eyes, from an innocent, not roughed up by life itself, little kid point of view.
R.I.P. Fess, you're an honorable man and will be missed.![]()
