Bear, refresh my memory... that CPU of yours runs a 400 MHz front side buss and has 512+MB of cache, correct? A 3200 Barton as I remember... I think so, and if so, you are just good enough to go to take advantage of a 800 ATI card. If you can afford it, get a x800XTPE. The problem with the nVidia offerings is twofold even if you don't run into power/heating issues...

1) Even with the most powerfull AMD CPU and low latency RAM, the water 3.0 is still messed up.

2) Even if your frame rates didn't bottom out when you turn up the AA and AF, which it does, even with the most powerfull CPU's, it still doesn't look much better.

The overall quality of picture is simply better with AA and AF turned up with the ATI 800 cards. Of course, you get to gamble as to whether or not you end up with graphics problems, but I've found they seem to be more severe in the Intel rigs for some reason.

Kinda odd... a game optimized for nVidia and Intel and I'm telling people go AMD and ATI!

Jasko, shipping to Sweden from the States these days may be cheaper than you think. When you e-mail Joe, include a copy of your diagnosis so he has as much information as possible.

I was always a fan of ATI and I went to this card because I could get it for a good price (Almost 50% off)... was it worth it? So far not really.... I get white caps but I get frames so low that it is moot. I am trying different drivers .. but after this I will never buy another Nvidia card again. I am even thinking of selling this one. Perhaps with a better CPU I could better utilize the card... but on my rig.... it is nice but I expected better... much better.

YES YES YES - I agree with you !

And i'm sure (really SURE) that i would have had better fps with an ATI X800XT - XT PE

I have seen improvements overclocking 9800pro @ XT's freq. (412/780) , and freq. of X800XT- xt PE are 500/1000 - 520/1120 (with much more pipeline )

p.s. : sorry for my english

I just upgraded from a 3200+ barton 512mb mem and a 9800 pro 128meg to a 3200+ OCed to 2.5 1gig corsair xms and a X800XL and WOW! I can play at full settings with 6xAA and 16xAF on full settings and maybe dip below 28fps when there is a lot of action. If you have the means I highly recommend one of these cards and CPUs.

P.S. I don't have any graphic anomalies and am running the card at 445 core 1066 mem at 58C at full load.

Back off 20% of the value you overclocked to for safety's sake. 516 and 550 would be the sweet spot. Yes, it's fine now, but RAM does something called "burn in" which should really be called "burn down" because if you stay that greedy, chances are you will lose the ability eventually to even stay at the less greedy clock speed. Set it back now and forget it!

Ain't life grand when you got the CPU to push that fine card?!

Guys we talk alot about X800Pro and XT, but no one mentions X800XL. It is cheaper than Pro but faster. Problem is it's nowhere to be found. I bet if overclocked, it can match X800XT.

It cought my attention, but I can't find it here in Sweden, none of the hardware shops have it - some have never even heard of it!

Well, I would have preferred to wait a few months for the next generation vid cards, but I needed to use my old 9800Pro 128MB card in another PC before then so I decided to go ahead and get a 6800GT and hope I'd get at least some boost out of it.

Since I had a use for my other card and I want to start playing a few other games that should benefit from the 6800GT, I feel OK with the "upgrade", BUT like some of you I also found that the 6800GT was not much of an improvement at all over my old 9800Pro for IL-2/PF - basically gained only about 4FPS on Black Death and my personal saved track benchmark as well - about 15-20% improvement - certainly not much bang for the buck

I'm hoping at this point that there's something wrong with my install, because somebody posted above that they "bought a 6800GT and now can play smoothly at 1600x1200 with all Perfect settings", but for some reason I can't get this card to go above 1280x960 with FB/AEP/PF nor to set a refresh rate of anything but "adapter default" even though my monitor should be able to handle at least 100 at 1280x960 and 85 at 1600x1200, based on what I used to be able to get with my old 9800Pro (the 6800GT lets me try to choose 85 but always resets to "adapter default", and I don't even get a choice for 1600x1200 - just 1600x1024 and then 1920x1080)

Guess I may drop back to some older drivers and see what happens

Just for grins, I re-activated my WinXP Pro and did a fresh install of FB/AEP/PF to try my new 6800GT (my previous post was based on my usual Win98SE instance)

The results were about the same, so no big surprise there, BUT - just for a laugh I decided to set Water=3 and see what happened.

WHOA! it actually seemed to work pretty well - Black Death lost a few FPS but when I tried it on some Coral Sea QMB missions, I got very playable FPS (avg 35-40) and some really nice water effects (although I never really saw any whitecaps as such, the sun reflections in good weather were much more dazzling/natural looking and the rolling waves in rain/thunder settings were awesome) - unfortunately, it tends to be so dark during the stormy weather that it's kinda hard to get close enough to the water to actually see the waves, but they really looked incredible when I ditched and popped my life raft

On one of my test missions my SBD lost one wheel to flak from the Japanese ships, and I came in for a rough but safe landing back on my carrier on just one wheel - hopefully you can click on the link below to see the screenshot - it's not the best water shot but it does give you an idea of water=3 in good weather(and it's a cool picture anyway)

I upgraded from a ATI RADEON 9800XT
to a Nvidia 6800GT oc 6 months ago.
The change in overall performance was huge.
A near doubeling in 3D Mark 2003 score
along with a doubeling of UT 2003 benchmark.

As to the IL2 / PF soap opera series, frame rates
went up roughly 50% average.
Heat was less of an issue with the Nvidia.

Don't be fooled, the ATI 9800 pro is WAY BEHIND
the Nvidia offerings.
