"So the upgrade is useless if you have already an 'old' powerful graphic card (like 5900 / series - 9800 pro/xt) and you play fb/pf at 1024/768"
Why on God's Green Earth would you pay for a top-of-the-line graphics card to still play at 1024x768?
I bought a 6800GT and now can play smoothly at 1600x1200 with all Perfect settings, and that's exactly what I wanted...
EdNew said it best, really:
CPU+Chipset+RAM= FPS
Eyecandy, higher resolution=Vidcard
Not sure what you were expecting...

Don't forget about the monitor refresh rate at the given resolution.

Guys, You should always miss at least one generation when buying a new graphics card otherwise you are going to be disappointed.
The 9800 is still a GREAT card and is definitely fine for playing this game, those buying 6600's or 6800's and expecting a massive speed boost are going to be disappointed for sure.
Wait for the NEXT gen of cards if you have a 9600/9800 or a 5800/5900.
I still love my old 8500 for this game, it was â£25 about a year ago. What a bargain.
Maybe I will upgrade to a 9800 once they come down in price to about â£40 on ebay.
Chasing the top end new cards is for mugs who want to throw their money at Nvidia/ATI for another 5fps in my opinion.

Nice Overclock Millo! What cpu is that? A 3200+?? I have a 2500+ but it wont quite reach 400fsb, it wont boot over 395. It gets over 2800+ speeds tho no problem.

I am new to the IL2 series but, in other games I have seen considerable improvements in actual play smoothness. The only hassles I see now are from "server lag" from slow reporting/ping times.

I have to disagree with you. I went from a Nvidia 4200 to a 9800pro and then to an x800xtpe. I would have to say that the difference between the 9800 & x800xtpe was the same as the difference between the 4200 & the 9800. I can now play IL2 PF at 1600x1200 perfect with higher fps than I could at 1280x960 excellent with the 9800.
I did have to upgrade my psu after I got the x800 but it was worth it. Can you run PF at 1600X1200 perfect water=1, forest=3, effects=0 AAx2 & AAx2 (you don't need aa or af higher at 16x12) and still have an avg fps in the mid 30's? There is a BIG DIFFERENCE in performance with the x800xtpe.
My 2 cents

I couldn't tell you for sure about nVidia's current offerings except to tell you the reviews show them compareable to the ATI cards now until you engage the eye candy, which is where ATI starts to shine again. I can tell you my ATI x800XTPE card does fine in my rig, but I've got the CPU power and RAM and power supply to push it all along nicely along with water cooling for icing on the cake.
Even with my cheapy Corsair (good RAM by the way, especially for the money) RAM, I'm getting 3DMark05 version 1.2.0 scores of 6240. Are you going to get those sort of results without having the rig to run the video card on?... NO!
