The British Gov't has proven itself blind to the necessity of preserving historic assets. In the 1930's, I believe, they destroyed a ship that was contemporary with Nelson's Victory. Can you imagine someone making the decision to scrap a ship that was at sea in the age of Nelson? It makes a history lover weep.
Thanks Goose..........
You pulled the pin yet?, if so wherabouts.........
There was a post a while back discussing preserving aircraft etc etc.
Thousands made, none or few left......Spits, hurricanes, Lancasters, you name it we scrapped it.
I was listening to the radio on the way to work today whilst caught in the traffic, listening later than usual due to an accident on the motorway I heard they've restored to flying condition a Vulcan.![]()
IIRC it was the last one flying in the RAF and also the one that bombed Stanley, they were talking to the guy who drove the restoration team. I cant remember how they got the funding but no mention here http://www.tvoc.co.uk/ of lottery money but I bet they looked into or asked with a negative result.
Hell, a local infants and junior school wanted a few pounds to rebuild the kids play area and they were told they had to raise 50% first before the lottery would consider an application. A damn great bombers got no chance......
A friend of mine used to work on an RAF Vulcan base, according to him a simulated Russian attack squadron scramble was very impressive to see but actually quite scary first time out as the ground literally shook as they took off going hell for leather off the deck.
Now thats a noise I'd like to hear...... I've been close to a Vulcan flying low level many years ago and one was loud enough.
I also like the last point on the Vulcan sites mission statement:-
"˘ To assist in the conservation to full working order of other heritage aircraft of the 20th century
- I'll vote for that!
Goose and MOttie,
Interesting insights. I have long held a pipe dream of moving to some other country eg. Britain/England/Scotland as I have gotten fed up with the US's problems over the years.
Unfortunately, I see that such things seem to be everywhere.
Is there a country around where the people in charge haven't gone stupid?
Perhaps that's politicians/ policy makers of all forms, in general, everywhere.
Phantom, trust me you dont want to come here to live.
It may be $2 a £ but were paying £1+ a litre for gas, I filled mine the other day and it cost me £63 or over $120 bucks and thats every 10 days or so. Were taxed to the hilt, The great Gordon moneybags now Herr Uber Kaleun post 'Tone took an hour telling us what he was giving us all back at the budget. Then 10 seconds to say and by the way I'm scrapping the 10p tax level, this immediately negated the tax benefits he'd just announced.
Anyway, enough off topic political ranting......
Every country has its merits, beautiful scenery, history, elegant cities blah blah.
All I want is somewhere nice and warm where I can sun my rear end most of the year round relaxing when not sinking ships on SH3 and afford it all on my meagre pension.........
By the time I acheive this it will probably be SH33 and with global warming I'll get sunstroke in my present garden.
HA! at this rate, that won't exist for much longer. If we keep this trend, there will be no more of that, we won;t even remember the nations history!Originally posted by M0ttie:

Also the National Lottery fund is an absolute joke, worthy projects are not even sniffed at while the rubbish projects get the full backing.
Anyway, enough of the rant.
Another update on U-534:
Submarine's new lease of life
And some photos I found in a similar news article:

Strange to see the boat's hull all painted - makes her look less like a wreck.... All the more upsetting to know that she is shortly going to be chopped up.
This comment from the article stood out in particular:
"Cuttings were designed with such precision the sub could be reassembled in one piece."
So why the hell don't they reassemble her in ONE PIECE!!!???![]()
