I was curious to know what people onthis forum thought would be the top 5 DogFighters of this WW. I would like to see a ranking of the best from around the world that were active roll players in WWII.. Thanks

    The Fw-190A-9 gets my vote.

Any plane that is used the right way can be a good plane for dogfighting.

The Spitfire is a good plane but not the best.

Sakai, Johnson, Galland, Hill, Hartmann not necessarily in that order. I mention people because the aircraft were simply tools. Without the right pilot the aircraft was simply another target.

In RL, Yak-3 takes the cake without a shadow of a doubt, IMO followed by N1K2 "super zero".

All save one, as I understand.

Hartmann didn't dogfight, although that's a mark of smarts.

'Classic', slow speed dogfights (turn is everything, make circles smaller!!):

    Gladiator
    Cr. 42
    I-153

'New Fangled', monoplane dogfighters (turn, climb and a little speed)

    A5M
    Ki-43
    A6M2
    Hawker Hurricane
    Supermarine Spitfire Mks I-V
    Yak-3
    N1K2-J
    Ki-84
    Ki-100
    F4F & FM-2
    F6F
    F8F
    Brewster Buffalo

'Next Generation' energy fighters (Swoosh! Ratattatatatata! Uh, where did he come from? Speed, armament and roll)

    Bf-190F
    FW-190A/D
    La-5
    Spitfire Mk XII & XIV
    Tempest Mk V

There are several 'halfway house' fighters as well, that can dogfight very well, but were too outclased by their opponents, in either turn or speed, to really give them that much of a chance:

    P-40
    D. 520
    P-39D
