I did surf net and saw auction where they did sell Hero of Soviet Union Order! I did look to wonder who did it belong and where it came from.
It was order once belonged to Kiriya Shalva Nesterovich , great Soviet fighter ace! Did shot down 37 german planes, did many heroic acts...also wrote a book.
I feel in my heart that selling those things like horses...are not just right. I don't know...i just feel that way. idk.
that happens - part of an estate sale where there are no living relatives...a soldier outlives his children - or no one can be found before the item is lost.
a better question might be 'what kind of person would purchase such a thing and to what end?'
Its one thing to have a museum or veterans group acquire something of this nature, to me that is the best case...
but a private collector?
thats what would irk me.
Even if a museum buys these things its still sad if it leaves the country that awarded it.Originally posted by Urmo22:
Yes, if museum buys it. Or state buys it back. But if some rich guy just buys it as investment then it really stinks IMO...
For example there is a lot of German memorabilia in the Australian war museum including items from Richtofen and I remember thinking at the time they are things that would be better preserved in a museum in his home town in Germany.

I'll never forget seeing that bit of fabric cut from his tri-plane. It was like he was standing in the room next to me.
