I installed the game yadda yadda, got no error messages at all. Then when I click to play the game, it waits a few seconds, then says the wrong CD is inserted. And then the entire DVD-ROM drive disappears from the my computer screen. Under hardware, the drive is listed only as,"IDE DVD-ROM 16x". I took the drive out of the tower to try and find a manufacturer, but was unable to. The only thing I found was the model number "DHI-G40 B" which doesn't bring anything up in google either. What am I supposed to do from here?

Google is free, and they may think they're really great. But IMHO...they ain't all that great! Instead, I use WebFerretPro 5.0 and Copernic Agent Personal, each of which costs $29.95 US. If I'm spending my own money on a product, it's better than almost anything else available. I guarantee it!

Your drive is an Artec (Ultima Electronics Corp.) DHI-G40B, apparently sold primarily in Europe. But looking at the website, Ultima doesn't provide firmware updates or any other support for their CD/DVD drives directly by model number.

    Questions:

    1. Do any of your other programs, including Windows Explorer, have problems reading the drive?

    2. Do you have the drive on the same IDE channel (connected to the same ribbon cable) as a hard disk?

    3. Is the drive connected and jumpered as the master on its IDE channel?

Pending the answers to those questions, some suggestions:

    1. See Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP, under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, 1. Preventing Installation Problems - General Comments. These comments also apply to preventing game play problems.

    2. Have Windows re-detect your drive.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges.
-- b. Click on Start > Run, type services.msc, then click on OK.
-- c. Double-click on Plug and Play. (If you get a Configuration Manager message, click on OK.)
-- d. In the Startup Type list, click on Automatic, then click on OK.
-- e. Close Services, and reboot into normal Windows.
-- f. If you get no error messages during bootup, reboot into Safe Mode.
-- g. Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
-- h. Click on Properties, click on the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager.
-- i. Click on the CRX-320EE listing, and press Delete.
-- j. Close Device Manager back to the Desktop, and reboot into normal Windows. Your drive should be re-detected.

If none of the above help, post a DxDiag report in this thread so that we can take a look at your system and maybe make recommendations. See [Posting Guidelines] Help! I'm Having Technical Problems and I Don't Know Why!?! under To post a DxDiag report for a how-to. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs before saving the report to a file, and post *ALL* of the contents of the file. If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information', System Manufacturer and System Model at the top of the report, also include that information in your post.

The DVD-ROM drive is on the secondary IDE, set to slave, with a CD-ROM drive set to master, also on the secondary. The hard drives are on the primary. Here's the DXDiag

I didn't try EVERYTHING listed in that how to guide for prepping the computer, mostly because it would take several hours. If possible, I'd like to try narrowing the problem down a bit more before I did everything the general guide mentioned.

Also worth mentioning, I checked out the event viewer, and this error keeps popping up:
The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.

    followed by
The device 'IDE DVD-ROM 16X' (IDE\CdRomIDE_DVD-ROM_16X_________________________3.10____\5&c21666e &0&0.1.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

    Edit-
upgraded firmware from 3.10 to 3.11
    updated all drivers
    ran virus and adware check
    installed safedisk patch
    tried microsoft support workarounds

and still...STILL...having the same problem. I am at wit's end.

    More questions:

    1. Are you starting Revelation with DVD1 or DVD2 in the drive?

    2. Do any of your other programs, including Windows Explorer, have problems reading the DVD drive with the new firmware installed? Can you open, for instance, Manual.pdf directly from \common\support\manual\english on Revelation DVD2?

    3. Which of the steps have you tried under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, 1. Preventing Installation Problems - General Comments in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP?

    4. Did you have Windows re-detect your DVD drive?

    5. Did you install the new video driver as per Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP?

    6. Have you tried re-installing Revelation from a clean boot as detailed in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP?

Pending the answer to (all of) those questions:

    1. Try disconnecting your CD drive completely - both ribbon and power cables. Then, reconnect and rejumper your DVD drive as the master on the IDE channel. Start Revelation.

    2. Make certain that your DVD's are absolutely clean - no smudges or fingerprints anywhere on them. Use warm non-abrasive soapy water and a lint-free cloth for cleaning. If there are any deep scratches, you might be able to successfully use one of the various disc-repair kits available.

    3. The laser lenses in a DVD drive can build up a 'haze' coating which may foul up drive read operation, particularly if:
-- You live in a dusty area.
    -- There's a smoker in the house.
-- You don't have a vent hood over your stove.
    -- You use plug-in oil-dispersing room deodorizers.

Using a DVD laser lens cleaner might help if reading the Revelation disc is part of the problem. This is essentially a DVD with tiny brushes on it that take the haze off of the lenses. The best ones (especially for smokers, non-hooders, and oilers) come with a cleaning solution used to wet the brushes, but this isn't a strict requirement. Run the cleaning cycle at least 3 times in succession, as a first pass.

    4. Revelation usually wants your \My Documents folder on the C: drive.
-- a. Use Windows Explorer to find \My Documents. (If you don't have a \My Documents folder, create one with read/write privileges.)
-- b. If \My Documents is on D:, right-click on the folder, and select Properties > Target.
-- c. Change the target drive to C:\.
    -- d. Reboot.
-- e. If it doesn't already exist, create the sub-folder \myst4-revelation savegames in your My Documents folder.
    -- f. Then, under \My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames, create the sub-sub-folder \journal, if it doesn't exist. You should end up with \My Documents\myst4-revelation savegames\journal.

1.)After installing the game, I am able to load the autoplay menu, and from there I select play, with disc 2 in the drive.

2.)Yes, I am able to explore the files inside DVD 2 with explorer. I am also able to access the manual from the autoplay menu.

3.)From the prep guide, I have done:
    Virus Scanning
    Spyware/Adware checking
    Clearing temp folders
    Windows Update

The my documents folder is located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\My Documents

    Will that work?

4.)Windows automatically detects the missing disk drive after restarting the computer.

5.)I'm lost as to what exactly you're asking me to do in that thread. My graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440. Which driver version would I be needing to install? I have the latest installed right now.

6.)No, have not tried complete steps for a clean boot/install. Would that be necessary given the nature of my problem?

-- A clean boot Revelation re-install may or may not help. This is something to do after you've tried everything else.

-- The autoplay menu may access the manual from your Program Files Revelation folder, not from the DVD. Can you read Manual.pdf from the DVD, using Windows Explorer?

-- Virus scanning, spyware/adware checking, clearing temp folders, etc., are steps under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP and are very good things to do. However, Installing and Re-Installing Revelation is the next section down from Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up. The question is, which of the steps have you tried under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, 1. Preventing Installation Problems - General Comments?

-- C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\My Documents might work, but Revelation may not find it. Use Windows Explorer to look at \My Documents. Does it have a \myst4-revelation savegames subfolder? If not, create one, as well as a \journal sub-subfolder. (See "4. Revelation usually wants....", above.) But note that if you have problems saving game progress after getting Revelation running, you'll need to create C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents, with a \myst4-revelation savegames subfolder and a \journal sub-subfolder.

-- Under Installing NVIDIA Drivers in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP, you'll find:

"Some older video chipsets - the Geforce 4 MX/MX 400, for example - do not play nicely with the latest NVIDIA drivers. If you have a GeForce 2/3/4 chipset or a low-number FX (like 5200) and version 84.15 doesn't help, try version 45.23. Then, if 45.23 doesn't help, try version 52.16. Install using the procedure below. These drivers are both available here."

Be certain to install as per the instructions under Installing NVIDIA Drivers, especially regarding uninstalling your existing driver before installing the new driver.

Yes, I can access the manual off of DVD one using windows explorer.

Followed your suggestion for the saved game folder.

Followed every detail for a clean Revelation uninstall/reinstall.

    Instlaled Geforce drivers V45.23

Currently applying patch 1.02, to be followed by 1.03. If that doesn't work, I'll try driver version 52.16. If THAT doesn't work, then I'll be really stumped.

Just wanted to let you know I really appreciate all your help in this matter, and as is the case with computer problems of these types, I've actually learned a lot in the process of trying to fix the problem. So even if we can't get it working, it wont be a completely wasted effort.

nope...still getting the same error. On a whim I installed the myst III that came with IV, and it works fine. I don't know if that means anything, other than the DVD drive is at least working partially.

"Followed every detail for a clean Revelation uninstall/reinstall." Does that mean that you did all of the steps under Installing and Re-Installing Revelation, 1. Preventing Installation Problems - General Comments in Myst IV: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP before starting Revelation?

Unfortunately, you may have a DVD drive that simply isn't capable of properly reading the dual-layer Revelation DVD's to satisfy the copy protection. No matter what you do. The only fix for that is a new DVD drive.

But even if that's the case, since you've learned a lot, no, it's not completely wasted effort.

And my compliments for doing as much as you've done! Most other folks would have long ago given it up as a bad job.

Oh man, I could just kick myself. While doing everything listed in this forum, I also sent a message off to ubisoft. They sent me the link for two files that replace a .bin and the revelation.exe, I assume something like an official no-cd patch. That fixed it right up.
    "
Once you are fully patched to v1.03, download the fix for Myst IV Revelation from http://help.support.ubi.com/Myst4-103-nDVD.zip and unzip the contents to the Myst IV Revelation\Bin folder (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Myst IV - Revelation\bin) overwriting the existing 'myst4.exe' and 'm4_thor_rd.dll' files. Once this is done, you should not have any more trouble playing Myst IV Revelation."

I don't remember seeing that in the general thread, so if you want to patch it into the sticky for future posterity, that'd be great. Unless I just missed it. But I don't think I did. It's not the safe-disc patch, but it probably deals with it.
