Hello all
I have been playing comp games for 20yrs and have recently noticed this games iminent release, which has me very excited since i thought silent service on the Amiga was superb in the 90's.
I am now looking on uboat.net at all the subs history's and info, which leads me to my question!
I realise you can choose the start year and then the flotilla and so be given a correct base and uboat choice, for those details...But can you then choose the specific uboat ie:u-55 or even u-96 etc.?
My Query is on reading the game facts page and so on i see that the game will contain 70+ships which is a good number, except'and i can't belive no one has mentioned that the recent news on the reconition manual states about the games 49 ships!! this is a significant drop!!!
And my concern is the dynamic campaign...will we be free to pilot our sub as we please to the patrol area wherever we like, and is there still a chance of a contact outside of the patrol area(either on the way or the way back).
Please can anyone help with these questions as i cant find answers on the forum's
Thank's.

Ok im going to guess at most of your questions.
I dont think you will be able to choose the number boat you get, they couldnt in real life so this is cool. Also dont you want to make a great name for your own uboat number?
Maybe in historical missions you will pilot u-96 ect.
If it is a drop to 49 ships i wouldnt complain, silent service you used to play had about 10-15 ships in it, so 49 is pretty amazing dont you think? Im not complaining. I think if you check into it there were probably not that many more then 49 generic ships sailing around anyway (discounting the slight variations on cargo ships and destroyers) All in all pretty cool!
The dynamic campaign you can go where you want, though im not sure if you can jump into "ship view" whenever you want. I know i read somewhere that you couldnt, i dont know if this will have been changed or not. I hope this has!
All in all if you loved silent service (like me) you should be pretty chuffed with how cool this game looks, and how well it is shaping up. Also if its not that good, there is a wicked community out here (as you can see looking at sub sim and these forums) and im sure Beeryus and others will make the game what people want it to be with mods if its not up to scratch.
Remember though its been delayed to add dynamic campaign, and delayed to add polish, so it should be pretty good!

Thanks for your thought's.
I don't want to choose a famous sub at all, in fact i was hoping to choose one that is still missing or had no success or one i found the history interesting, but as long as we are allocated a u number that will do.!
49 ships is'nt bad at all just a huge drop from the planned 70.!
Now this campaign issue does concern me,if you are correct and you can't use ship view until you reach patrol area that would spoil any immertion for me and the idea of not seeing a contact unless you are in the patrol zone would to.
The problem i thought with Silent Service was the fact you piloted around in map mode and it stopped when you had a contact, you never needed to stand on deck looking for any sign's of enemy ships in eeire conditions, you new there was one around.
Thought's please.

there is still a high chance that we'll be able to assign the u-boat numbers in the custom mission builder.. but only time will tell for sure.
Since SH3 is going to be a realistic simulation, most likely when you are on your patrol, the watch officer will alert you if he sees anything, so you won't have to constantly search yourself..
Silent Service was a great game, I have many fond memories of that sim
I think, overall, we won't be dissapointed with SH3. The dev team seem very commited to the game.

It's all looking very impresive and the graphics as good as i've seen anywhere, but its all about options:having 5 or 6 boat numbers to choose from after finding the history about them would have been nice obviously if they are relevent to the flottila and year etc,and i really hope i can pilot the sub where i like while watching for enemy ships myself, its that looking into the storm convincing yourself you keep seeing something that's the grip on these games,if charlie just shouts down every time a ship turns up and all you do is deal with it everytime it losses its emertion and becomes more arcadey.if you know what i mean.

I'm going be be lazy and not look this up, but since it was brought up in this thread.......
What is Ship view???......and why is it limited to anything with a dynamic campaign?

I'm hoping they don't tell you the boat number, or preferably I'd want to assign my own number. I'll find it difficult to suspend disbelief if they hand over a boat whose history I already know. I'm hoping they'll allow us to number our own boats because that way we can all assign numbers based on our own choices - assign them randomly, choose a number from a well-known boat, choose a fictitious boat number, etc.
Options are paramount in a sim, and this is one thing that should, in my view, allow room for the player's desires.

I absolutely agree with you. I remember reading somewhere that all players will have their own personal war story, so why not have the ability to assign your own number?
