    You should be able to get it to run just fine in 1400 X 900. Don't settle for less than your native resolution. Go back to the original post in this thread and try again for 1400 X 900. Make sure when you change your conf.ini that you DO NOT run setup again after that or it will undo the changes. Also if it's still stretching make sure when you exit the game that the changes you made to the conf.ini are still there. If not post a new thread and we can find the solution.

    Urufu, I have tried all the options as out lined and 1280 X 960 gives me the least stretching (hardly noticeable). As I fly no cockpit it puts all relative information on screen in the right place, if I use 1440 X 900 then I have panels left and right where my speed/ height information and enemy planes approaching indicators are not relative to the edge of the screen (they are placed where the edges of the "Black Bands" would be) and therefore planes that should be seen coming from left or right aren't visable until they are about 20% into the display. If you have a cure for this please advise I would be happy to hear from you

    I agree. Why would he post those screenshots and then not explain anything? In any case, I believe he is talking about the program in this thread:

    I'm trying to get IL-2 to run in widescreen, but am also having trouble getting it to remember my conf.ini settings. I've edited the conf as per the guide at the beginning of this thread, with the resolution set at 1366x768. However, when I start IL-2, it reverts to a (stretched) 640x480 display. Opening the conf.ini afterwards showed that the resolution had been changed to 640x480.

    In an effort to avoid this, I set the resolution back to 1366x768 and marked it as read only after saving the changes. THis made no difference; IL-2 still displayed in 640x480, though the conf.ini was unchanged when I inspected it afterwards.

    By the way, I found a second conf in My Documents, and repeated the above with this one also. Still no joy.

    I've set it to run in Windows XP SP2 compatability mode, and the installation directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\.

    I'd really appreciate any advice- I'm all out of ideas!

    Thanks

    Edit: I'm using Vista (as if that wasn't obvious )

    Did you go through all the steps?

    It looks like you've either missed out steps:

    5) Look for 'EnableResize=' and set it to 0.

    6) Look for 'SaveAspect=' and set it to 0.

    Or you've gone into one of the ingame graphic setup options or the setup application after making those changes.

    Or the file is read only and its not saved.

    Thanks for the reply,

    I've made sure I followed all the steps, and I didn't use the setup application or in game options afterwards.

    I think I've found the problem though: the whole of the Il-2 folder is marked as read only. I've tried changing this, and an 'Applying Attributes' status bar indicates that something is happenning- however, these changes don't seem to last. I'm the administrator, and have given myself 'full control'. I also have UAC switched off.

    I've tried moving the installation folder out of Program Files (x86), but the same thing happens

    I'm new to Vista, so the whole thing is probably just a schoolboy error on my part!

    EDIT: Have found a solution! I copied the whole installation folder to an external HD, altered the Conf.ini, then copied it back. A clumsy solution, but it works! Now to remember not to change the graphics settings...

    ok guys

    I don't know if my problem was Windows 7 related or just widescreen related. I do know that I have always ran this computer (a Dell laptop - 17 inch LCD) like it recommends which is 1920 x 1200 and I have never had a proble before rather it be on Vista or XP.

    I never played with the config file under those OS because the game would force itself into 1600 x 1200 and force the screen that size and it worked fine with me. Now under Windows 7 I get the black bars on the side of the screen. I have tried playing with the config file and still can't fix it. I have ran as admina nd still can't fix it.

    At this point any ideas or suggestions would be great.

    Here is my config file.

    [window]
    width=1920
    height=1200
    ColourBits=32
    DepthBits=24
    StencilBits=0
    ChangeScreenRes=1
    FullScreen=1
    DrawIfNotFocused=0
    EnableResize=0
    EnableClose=1
    SaveAspect=0
    Use3Renders=0

    [GLPROVIDER]
    GL=Opengl32.dll

    [GLPROVIDERS]
    Open GL=Opengl32.dll
    DirectX=dx8wrap.dll

    Do you get the black bars in the menu or when you're actually flying? You're supposed to have them in the menus but when you get into the game it's full screen. Do you have the game installed in program files folder? If so try moving the whole game folder to a location outside of program files folder and try to edit the conf.ini again and run the game.
