I tried the use3renders=1. It did not do anything, in fact Il-2 will not even start when I set it to 1. Also, there is another thing that I do not understand - The conf.ini file seems to not take my modifications and changes some back to what they were. My procedure is open in notepad, make the modifactions, save, close the file, then open Il-2 to see what happens. I usually start a quick mission to see what the screen looks like, then shut down and do it all over again. I have tried about everything I can think if to try to get this to work but, so far no joy.
A good example of this is if I change fullscreen =1 to 0, and open the game, it does not open in a window. Then when I reopen conf.ini, fullscreen is still set to 1. What gives? It does seem to take when I open up setup, but then of course I lose all settings in conf.ini and have to redo width and height etc.
Also, should I be running directx or openGL?
Needs to run in opengl. Are you using Vista? If so there might be several reasons the changes won't take. Primary reason being that if you install to program files folder in vista it makes all .ini files read only, move the game to a folder outside of Program Files (I use C:\Games\etc.) and that should solve it. More rarely sometimes vista will make a second conf.ini file in \\Documents and Settings\etc. and use that, so if moving the game folder outside of program files doesn't fix it do a search of your hardrive to find the second conf.ini. If in XP make sure conf.ini wasn't accidentally set to read only.
I have been running the widescreen setup for over a year now. I have never been able to get icons on the right side of the screen in hud view. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 225bw with a desktop res of 1680x1050 with the game set up the same. I have no stretching or distorting. here is my conf.ini setting:
[window]
width=1680
height=1050
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=1
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
I am running an NVidia GeForce 8800GT PCIe card.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks much for all the great tools and tips. I will be getting IL2 Stab.

Il2 is not meant to support widescreen, this is a bug and unfortunately there is no fix nor is there one forthcoming.Originally posted by WB_FlashOver:

My new monitor is 1440 X 900...- Il-2 Stab doesn't seem to have this setting & I seem to be having some trouble syncing my Settings in game ,with Config files & Il2 Stab settings ...any easy fix?Originally posted by WOLFMondo:
Possibly the most asked question of all time, other than when is patch x.xx coming out?
1) Open the folder where IL2 46 is installed, its usually 'c:\program files\ubisoft\IL2 Sturmovik 1946' if you used the default install option.
Another way of finding this is to right click in the IL2 46 desktop icon to bring up a drop down menu, click on 'Properties' to open up the shortcuts properties menu, go to the 'Shortcut' tab and click on 'Find Target'.
2) Look for a file called 'Conf.ini', open it up in Notepad or a text editor.
3) Look for the following lines of text, they should be near the top:
[window]
width=1920
height=1200
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
4) Edit the lines 'Width' and 'Height'. These lines correspond to the resolution IL2 will display in. Enter in your screens native resolution or the resolution you want to play IL2 in.
The example above is for a 24" 16:10 screen. A 19" 5:4 screen is 1280x1024 which is standard resolution for that sort of size TFT/LCD. A 16:10 19" widescreen is 1280x800 etc. More info on screen sizes can be found here.
5) Look for 'EnableResize=' and set it to 0.
6) Look for 'SaveAspect=' and set it to 0.
7)Save the file, close it and run IL2.
For a full description of the different display options in IL2 please look here and for some helpful setup guides look here
*edit*
Please note that changing any options within the 'Setup.exe' or changing the in game video settings will overwrite the conf.ini and the resolution changes you've previously made with a resolution IL2 supports.
Just follow the steps again once you've made your desired changes within Il2 or the 'setup.exe' to get the resolution you want.
Alternativly use IL2 Stab. This programme allows changes to be made without the need to go into IL2 setup or the conf.ini for most user settings.
In that case I would dispense with IL2 Stab (unless someone can pipe up with a known fix) and edit the conf.ini manually. I'm not familair with IL2 stab but probably running it after the conf.ini changes would revert it to a resolution it does support (thats a guess!).
Try changing it too:
[window]
width=1440
height=900
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
After you save it, change the file properties to read only. I would hold off running Il2 stab after that too see if its worked.
IL2 should in theory not have a problem with 1440x900 as its 16:10. Alternatively you could try 1280x800 to see if that works. Its a slightly smaller 16:10 resolution.
I haven't gotten it to work yet, but you're right about the aspect being the problem, I think. It seems like it's cramming the 16:10 aspect 1920x1200 resolution into the same 4:3 aspect it uses for 1600x1200.Originally posted by UniversalWolf:

In other words, it's displaying 1920x1600 at 4:3 aspect. That's a much more succinct way to say it.
I'll post an update when I get a chance.
Thanks for the help! </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Same problem. I heve fixed it using IL2 Stab instead of changing manually settings in conf.ini. Great program indeed, it runs also
Vista Ul. 64. Bye G.G.
This thread has proved to be most useful, thanks to all, both for asking and answering questions.
But I have one of my own, that might throw confussion upon it; then again maybe it wont...
I have a laptop (s******s... "yeah, I know, wish I had a PC") that is a Dell Inspiron 6400, Intel G45M-128mb ram Chipset, 1019mb DDR, 80-160GB HDD blah blah.
I was wondering about what are reasonable gameplaying values for the Anti-Alising line?; considering I do not have any Pixel Shading options/hardware/software.
I am asking, so I can have smoother looking A/C for general gameplay, and also to make some 'screeny' pics of above basic vinialla pixelated edges - can be so 90's looking; having said that though, I still play 'Another World' from time to time; the reduxed for PC version although I did play the original when it came out (I was 30 on Thursday).
