I've searched and searched but cannot find a program that will convert descriptive notation to algebraic. Does anyone know if such a program exists?

I googled "descriptive to albgebraic" and found many pages discussing this. Here's one that includes a few links. I haven't tried any of them myself.

There are a number of pieces of freeware/shareware that you can install on your computer that will do the conversion from descriptive to algebraic nicely. I myself have an old shareware program called chessbd (still available at http://www.dfong.com/chessbd/) that does the job nicely. Others like to use Chessbase Light, the freeware version of Chessbase (see http://www.chessbase.com/download/c...). I'm sure there are other programs available.

Thanks Darthmix. I also Googled but used the word "notation" and somehow missed these.

For those who might want to convert, note that chessbd (www.dfong.com/chessbd/) does the trick very nicely. Note also that after downloading one must go into chessbd.ini in the chessbd directory and add: "outnotation=2". Then the program converts descriptive to algebraic.
("outnotation=1" enables output in English descriptive. "outnotation=2" enables output in algebraic. "outnotation=0" enables output in same form as input.)

Doesn't the last post from lewiej answer this?

The problem is that CHESSBD program does not work with Windows 7 64-bit, it won't run.

I take it you've tried Compatibility mode?

Ya, sadly that did not work. I am however able to play the games out with http://www.chesslab.com/PositionSearch.html which converts the moves to algebraic, then put that into the PGN file for the website for my grandfather's games... and people on chess.com have been incredibly helpful on any problems I run into.
