PWNAGE!!!
(sorry, couldn't resist, lol)
What does that mean? I have always wondered about that term.PWNAGE!!!
In my short time of buying graphics cards and watching hardware forums I have come to the following conclusions about graphics cards:
ATI has better image quality.
ATI has less of a performance penalty with AA/AF at high levels
ATI has better AA
nV does better in OpenGL games, but not enough to get excited about.
nV has that freakin' shimmer at least with it's current and last generation
ATI is horrible at getting their cards to market and pricing them competitively within a reasonable time frame. Their stuff stays vaporware for ages.
After following the GPU rat race for some time, I am absolutely convinced of these facts and no one will ever convince me otherwise.
I would love an x1800xt, but it won't be out for another month. Then when it is available it will sell for like $100 over MSRP but will be out of stock everywhere. By the time prices approach MSRP it will be time for another hardware cycle. They will get it out in decent numbers in a refresh. By the time it is selling below MSRP it will no longer be relevant.
I am an ATI fan, but recently bought a 7800GTX after waiting quite awhile for the "Fudo". After watching this whole thing play out, I am convinced that buying the very fastest GPU on the market is a bad idea regardless of the brand.
From now on I will buy last year's best ATI card. Being almost exclusively a flight simmer makes me less vulnerable to the electronics rat race. Flight sims are around a long time, while hardware gets better around them. A 9800pro still does a nice job on this sim.
Anyway, the 1800xt is certainly a sweet card if you can get one.
Thanks for the reviews.
hmm, judging from the IL2 benchmarks I think I will stay away.

I don't see anything there about testing methodolgy for either PF or FB. Is it merged install? what patch version? which track? ect......
That's the trouble with benchmarks, it's hard to know how they tested unless it's a big@ss game like HL2 where they tell you.
I remember reading 2 reviews on the 7800GTX that showed really different benchies for LOMAC. One (Firing Squad?) showed that performance doubled (over the 850xt) while x-bit labs showed that the sim would go no higher than 30fps regardless of the resolution. X-bit labs was closer to the truth. LOMAC doesn't budge much no matter what you throw at it.
It's too bad that it won't be out for awhile. I feel better when we have had people on this forum bench stuff and report. I find this forum very helpful and quite civilized compared to the bickering that goes on at other forums.
No doubt, more benchies will come out.
Please explain to me what that means.Originally posted by james_ander:

There's many stories out there about how it got started but it's just a kewl way of spelling own, as in you got owned! or that X1800xt owns! then pownage or pwnage became popular. (from what I can tell it's not pronounced with the p)
