Avro, being privy to 1/2 of your technique I'm keeping mum---that first shot on the glass (???) looks very effective---a moody high contrast view which comes close to looking absolutely real---carrier at low speed in a choppy sea at sunset. A clear demonstration that simple techniques using light are often more effective than more elaborate ones. Cheers!
It was rude of me not to mention your model Avro - it looks awesome.
I guess I got a little excited to post Tim's stuff.
I like the effect in your second photo. The ship looks like it's sitting in a relatively shallow clear-water lagoon![]()
The ripples may be a little big for that scale, but put a PT boat to cruiser sized thing there, and you'll have a pretty convincing photo, on par with Tim's like above. Maybe you could go crazy and get glass sheets with variable sized "ripples" for various scales - or make your own with silicone rubber.

I think another thing you could try is set the ship in the table, set your table on the beach, and take a low angle photograph. If a lower focal length is used, the table will simply blur into the real horizon. (Thinking out loud here...never done a ship in my life)

Nice suggestion this thread.
I like to visit the 'Who Here Does Model Planes' thread so this could be a nice addition to it. As I am not a modelmaker but like to fool around a bit with my photo editing program I took the liberty to edit your second image.
Cheers, U.

Looks like a quick snap-shot from an enemy recon aircraft!
