I stopped playing IL2 for this reason and i had hoped IL2 1946 would have brought some improvement but actually it didn't.
I mainly fly SP campaign (3.34 DCG) and i am *again* with the same issues with AI. My flight is much faster than i who am forced for many many km to chase them at full speed overheating my engine most of the times while they nonchalantly climb to 5000.
To add to it, the enemy airplanes seem to *still* be acting like the laws of physics didn't apply to them...exactly as in the original IL2...exactly as the friendly AI.
AI is faster, never overheats and almost never stalls...i get the feeling they are with jet engines while i am with a 1stWW airplane. A sitting duck in other words.
The frustration soars the limits of human patience when i see after long minutes of chasing an enemy plane, one of my AI wingmen in the flight comes from behind me, passes me, reaches him and shoots him down before i do....and all of this while i am at full throttle 110% chasing!!!!!!!!!
It is written in many places that beyond .3 distance it's impossible to hit something...with my HUMAN airplane how am i supposed to reach an uber AI plane and cut that distance if he has uber engine????????????
The AI is just inhuman and their planes accelerate like their engines, manouverability and stability weren't following the same laws of physics i do. While this is just plainly ridiculous in formation flight it is *dramatic* when in combat.
I thought in 1946 this thing had been corrected or at least bettered but i am very sad to see it hasn't. I wanted to ask you all if there are mods or settings to tweak in the config files to make the AI (friend and foes)less uber because otherwise i will put 1946 on the shelf, just like my original IL2.
The sim is good but this uber AI is too annoying. Can anyone help on this?

AI always have had the advantage in the IL2 series and I doubt that will ever change. It would likely take a major re-write of the game code and all efforts are now focused on the upcoming Storm of War sim. It's a realism killer, but go to the difficulty settings and on the first page, turn off "engine overheat". At least now you can run at full throttle forever and not cook the engine.

I don't wanna turn off the engine overheat...actually we need to turn on the AI's engine overheating.
I don't think it's that hard for them to make such a patch. They released 50 patches and they didn't think about fixing this problem?
"Realism Killer" is a bold statement. From a bunch of Devs who conceive YOUR airplane to be the only one in the skies behaving realistically i don't expect anything realistic anymore.
It's the second product i bought and it will be the last from their series.

so turn off engine overheat on off-line campaigns... no its not as realistic, but it means you deal with the more irritating problem of your engine cooking.
and anyway it is the last in the series, see above.

If at 110% i am systematically passed by my ai wingmen who nonchalantly go engaging the target i am chasing...and if the enemy plane i am chasing systematically flies faster than me this is because the AI engines are uber.
Removing the overheat on my plane won't just do they are just uber with or without me overheating.
Solution should be either to tune down the AI uber abilities or just tune up ours. Too hard to do for the devs i suppose. Much easier solution for me then.
It's called E-bay.

i have problems flying formation, i just can't keep level, i either overtake drop back or just piddle around. generally the AI don't cruise along in WEP so use that to gain on them, and then fiddle with the prop pitch, trim and revs to keep near them.
that or put yourself on a higher rank so they keep formation with you?
seen a few threads where this has been tested and basically the AI have the same fm's and engines, just they fly perfectly trimmed, perfect engine management, and don't have overheat issues...
what plane are you in and what are you chasing, out of interest?

Just a suggestion - but try flying online against some of the better pilots. you may discover you can't keep up with them either (I know from bitter experience).
If your response to someone going faster is 110% power 100% pitch and radiator full open... think again.
If your response to someone climbing faster than you is to pull back on the stick increacing your angle of attack.... think again.

It's just exactly as i said and it's been there since original IL2. AI planes = Uber.
No matter what plane you get...the AI both friendly and enemy are uber.
Simple as that.

there are concessions made for the AI yes, but there are also ways to counter these concessions which you don't seem to want to try out... like stenka says, try on-line and watch some of the better pilots pull away like the AI do.
as for friendly formations pulling away, they tend to be at cruising speed in formation, which is nowhere near the top speed of the planes, so it kinda suggests you aren't getting everything out of your ride

The AI is stupid compared to human intelligence. It's like giving your little brother a head start because you know you will catch him anyway.
