Ah! ....Well, remember that "U.S. Property" could also mean that the gun was officially consigned to one of the research facilities for evaluation.

We have quite a lot of "Foreign Hardware" in our possession!

Today I had a messy afternoon.

    I had to de-conserve two Yugo M-53's.

One stripped and cleaned, one to go:

    I have a question here.
Do other countries (U.K., Germany, U.S.,Russia, etc) use the same sticky grease to conserve their armory?

    Just look at that mess:

    Hmmmm, good question.

Yes the Bundeswehr armories use a special weapon grease which has some additional ingredients for long term conservation.

(I remember graphite being one them)

There was some NATO-number stuff on the cans so it must be something standardized with all members using the same.

Ah yes and it stinks !

    UPDATE : Found a pic

    Thats the stuff

    The name is S-743

I hope that 1931 is just a number

Celeon suggests using penetrating weapon oil like from Ballistol after the removal of the grease.

It crawls into the tiniest gaps all on its own.

Yes, my whole flat smells of ballistol.

Now I have a problem removing one (Last screw ofcourse) on a pistol grip.

    O.K.

    Mine is sorted out:

Pardon the bad quality (25600 ISO) = too lazy to put the speedlight on.

    Here is one for BR.

I found this one in Austria.
    Auto-Ordnance Bridgeport 1928 A1 WITH cutts compensator.

All that is missing is a drum magazine and then I'm off for some serious bootlegging.

Now here is a good example on why that disgusting grease is necessary.

Look what junk the somali pirates we've recently captured were armed with.

"Ja ! Zhere iz no hope of ezcape anymoar har har!"

"Yu are all prizonerz of zee Reich zo put yor arms into zee sky like you would be liddl birdz ja ?"

"Look at zis rusty russen junk Hans "

"Look ova here Günther ! Vhat do zee Amerikaner use to zay ? I dont wand a teenaidsh kueen , i just wand my rusty M-forteen "

Your collection is amazing....[drools just a little]. I love the pictures.

What was the preservative grease here in the US? Cosmoline? Something like that?

I talked with a former veteran who had purchased an original M-1 Garand that was at least Korean war vintage, and it was perfectly preserved in that goop. Took a while for him to clean it, but the weapon was primo.
