Not sure of the reference, but I think it was the History of US DD's in WW2 from Naval Institute. The problem was that hedge hogs were only supposed to go off on contact (presumably with the sub), so if they detonated when hitting the bottom, the firing ship might have thought they got a kill when they did not.
