It would appear not. those things historically had a lot less explosives than DC's, so less devastating. The bad part is that the DD is firing those at you from a distance, not passing over you. So he can hear you trying to get out of its way. Supposed to be devastating combo, historically it was. But i too have to yet see those in game.
will be good to know your opinion.Originally posted by Kaleun1961:
Thanks for the info, Red. I'll give it a test run next time I play.
Use this mission to test, is the U-505 but you are in a good position to prepare your attack.

I forgot about hedgehogs, i've seen them in action in videos only. I to am not looking forward to experiencing them.
How devastating are hedgehogs, if you get hit accurately with one are you a gonner?
In real life helgedogs had low explosive quantity, but they had a diretional charge as an anti tank ammo.
Depend on where they hits, they can to perforate the hull.
In game they have many diferent amount of damage.
I don't know how well the sink rates are modeled, or how smart the game's AI is, but here are some observations. I usually go as deep as I can initially, the more time I have, the better my chances of survival. After the escorts have dropped a few patterns I try to get a sense if they are set deep or shallow (based roughly on the amount of time between "depth charges in the water" and "boom". Once I have a feel for the pattern depth, I go the other way. It's worked so far.
I've been done by hedgehogs, and it isnt pretty, although at the time, I didnt know it was happening. A DD looked like it was going to go by me, and led me to believe that it hadnt detected me, with me sitting a few hundered meters off its amidships. Then bam, it throws out the hedgehog which has a ring like effect, that surrounds your UBoat. 2 secs later, you are toast. The first time, I was sitting at p-depth, hoping to escape as I had other times previously. I forget what year it was, but after that, I never sat at p-depth anymore, it was always c-dive and decoys. To me the hedgehogs are more devastating than DCs.
Somewhere along the line I remember reading that hedge hogs were not all that popular in the Atlantic. Evidently since there were many shallow areas they would often go off when they hit bottom instead of going safe or inactive. Then the escort didn't know if they got a hit or not. I don't know how well that would play out with the game's AI, but if the water is shallow enough if a pattern goes off, try playing dead and see what happens
I've never read anything negative about Hedgehogs nor ever seen those issues with shallow water. That would seem to make sense. If you can find that reference, please share it; I'd like to read that.
I still can't see why their going off in shallow water would be so disappointing. After all, depth charges go off without giving any indication as to their effectiveness. Although not as ubiquitous as conventional depth charges, I think they were a more effective weapon, enjoying a higher kill rate than depth charges.
