Chapter 2
? Break a Glass PART TWO
The swishing harmony of salty waves overlapping each other felt permanently etched to the insides of Jace’s ears, ringing loudly in his mind. He took a deep shuddering intake of air as he tentatively stepped off the white ship, holding his breath as the soles of his shoes stepped onto the uncharted territory of the soggy dock branching towards the golden sands of Jade Port. He exhaled.
It was a historical moment, not to be forgotten.
For a moment, the lids of his hazel eyes were draped down, his eyes closed, and for just that moment he was blind enough to almost imagine that the familiar sounds, emitting loudly from the rushing water, was the melody of waves folding into each other on the shores of Emerald. The seagull’s barking cries were just so familiar, forever etched into the recesses of Jace’s caged memories, and he became so close to deceiving himself of home, blocking out all of the erratic voices raging from every direction. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, he would see the beautiful layers of green on the burnt branches of oak trees and evergreens laid out before him. Above the trees would be a never ending canvas painted with the gentle brushstrokes of silvers and faded blues swirling overhead and creating a brilliant, wonderful sky...
His eyes snapped open, washing away his desperate illusions. Jace was surprised by how thoroughly he convinced himself, feeling a hollow aching disappointment at the unfamiliar sight of tall dark palm trees. The ambient sand was the rotten colour of mustard when reflected by the sky’s blinding lemony glow, never ending light that seemed to downpour from invisible buckets hanging in the atmosphere. Above all of the crisp palm trees was an inconceivably blue sky, so bright, too bright a shade of azure mixed with the crisp gold of the sun, sitting at the right of his vision like a yellow hole in the sky. It was all too much, too unnatural, too perfect, too unfamiliar. When he thought that the total environment was strange, his gaze travelled down to brush by the people, and he sucked in a suddenly sharp breath.
This island was drowned with females, so to speak.
Admittedly, Jace already knew that Jade Island was women-dominated. However, he has wrongly assumed the statistics had meant that there were just a slightly higher percentage of females than males. Again, Jace was finding that he was dead wrong. It wasn’t just a slightly higher percentage at all; he honestly couldn’t find another living male in sight.
“Oh, God,” Jace murmured under his breath. “This can’t be real,”
Will let out a low whistle, and even Leo from a short distance away could only stare open-mouthed. “Wow,” Will said under a low voice, and Kylie’s sharp laugh pierced though their incredulity. She swept through the crowd, her head held high, laughing in bliss.
“Now, this is what I call girl power!” She declared exuberantly, grinning in the boy’s direction.
“Minuet can’t possibly be serious,” Jace muttered, his eyes the size of the moon as he surveyed the island. I can just imagine Minuet’s deep laughter, his voice chiming “Oh I am.” It’s certainly something he would say.
“Come on,” Will sighed, beckoning Jace to follow him as they walked through the sand. Their movement were being followed by many sets of curious, multi-coloured eyes, sitting on the faces of all female people. Besides the obvious lack of the other gender, Jace was surprised by the diversity. Every eye colour possible was staring, greens and blues and hues of gold to rich chocolates. The colours of their hair were all unique, auburn reds and startling oranges – Jace has never seen orange hair before – cinnamon browns and raven blacks. With tremendous embarrassment, Jace couldn’t stop the thought that each and every one of the residents was admittedly attractive. He flushed instantly when it involuntairily crossed his mind.
I personally don’t see how it would be something to be embarrassed about.
“I really don’t see how I could last a month here,” Jace whispered urgently to Will beside him, who couldn’t suppress a smile.
“I bet Minuet could see it.”
Jace immediately turned away, gritting his teeth. People seemed to be pouring into the port, worrying him further.
“Female-dominated,” a terribly familiar voice sounded behind Jace, startling him as he pivoted to face the sound. There he was again, Leo, with his dark eyes, now hard, and a tight line to his mouth. “Minuet never said female-only island.”
“Yeah,” Jace replied, surprised suddenly that he was agreeing with him. When he turned away, somehow Jace felt Leo smile behind him. With gritted teeth, Jace couldn’t help but notice that he, Will, and Leo were the only males he could see in the crowd, even among the dozens of girls who had stepped off the ship with them. Silently, the actor cursed Minuet.
Honestly, I’d be thanking the director later, if I were him.
“Hello, and welcome to Jade Island!” A tall woman enthusiastically gestured to the crowd, her dark brunette hair tied into a low ponytail. Behind the lady was a tourist booth and a pile of phones and brochures. Taped on the torso of her black leather jacket was a name tag that read ‘Valarie Telasi’. She seemed to be an island greeter of sorts, speaking quickly and loudly while impossibly smiling a smile so wide Jace though it might just stretch off her face. However, only half a dozen of the visitors appeared to pay any real attention to Valerie, the directions of their gazes travelling to the rest of the port, most of them awed.
“Oh, look!” Kylie exclaimed excitedly, motioning her hands toward the circular center of the port. Purple balloons were lying ambient. “A dancer is performing for us! Oh, I feel so special,” Uneasily, the boys all pivoted to where Kylie’s finger was pointing, and Jace’s eyebrow rose in an odd mixture of surprise and disgust. It seemed that with each passing second, Jace disliked the island more and more.
In a white painted circle at the heart of the place, people were watching a doe-eyed blonde girl as her body twisted in a style Jace barely recognized as hip-hop. A wide grin was plastered on her face, and other residents appeared to be clapping, yelling her name in encouragement. At her bare feet was a silver boom-box, playing a song that Jace had never heard of before. For reasons he failed to fathom and against his will Jace found himself to like the catchy melody. Jace was disgusted by himself.
Oh my, feels just like I don't try
Look so good I might die
All I know is everybody loves me
Head down, swaying to my own sound
Flashes in my face now
All I know is everybody loves me
It was so loud, much louder than what Jace was used to in Emerald Island. With the mixture of music at full volume and claps and chants from the crowd, more than ever Jace just wanted to stuff feathers into his ears just to drown out the dizzying noise. By the way the crowd was chanting, he subconsciously learned that the dancer’s name was Paris. Her pale lemony hair was down and slightly curled, like the waves of a sea drenched in honey, and her eyes were the lightest shade of jade green that Jace has ever seen before. The features of her face were so delicate, like a priceless porcelain statuette. When she laughed, he realized that he’s never seen anyone look happier.
He became horrified at himself when he realized how pretty she was.
These new emotions and experiences Jace was learning would have been considered amusing in Irony’s eyes. Being love though, I must admit that I think it’s actually at least a bit cute on him.
Without Jace suspecting, Leo had managed to slip beside him. “She’s pretty, isn’t she?” He commented with a little smile in his voice that made Jace want to gag slightly. “Do you think you might choose her?”
“Go away,” Jace replied tersely.
A chuckle emitted from him. “I’m afraid I can’t. Minuet’s orders,” he was sure Leo was grinning.
“At least leave me alone, Leo,” Jace said through gritted teeth, taking a step away from Leo, who shadowed him.
“Finally you address me from my given name,” Leo chuckled. “Now, why should I leave you?” he countered, somewhat smugly as Jace approached closer to the dancer.
“Because you’re annoying,” The words felt dead on Jace’s lips.
“You can’t mean that.” His voice sounded amused.
Jace turned once to glare at Leo through blazing hazel eyes. “I’m serious.”
“That’s the thing,” Leo said as he stepped past him, closer to the crowd of residents. “You’re always so serious.” With a cryptic wink in Jace’s direction, Leo melted into the crowd. Momentarily, standing alone on the pavement, Jace had the strong urge to claw out his dark chocolate eyes.
Unexpectedly, a familiar warm presence shoved Jace’s back. Startled, he turned to see Kylie grinning at him, waving what looked like a dark violet phone in front of his bewildered face. “Gosh, Jace, couldn’t this island possibly be any more more awesome!” She excitedly shoved the phone into Jace’s empty hands, who stared at her questioningly. “We get free phones!”
“My-Link!” Valerie yelled from where she stood at the tourist booth.
“Yeah, my-link,” Kylie corrected herself carelessly, holding her own my-link to her chest as if it were her child. “I’ve NEVER had a phone before! This is amazing! And she says there’s this feature where you can teleport to people! I cannot wait to try that – hey, let me add you!” Kylie cried exuberantly, and her eyes suddenly scanned her own phone contraption as her thumbs pressed the padded buttons. Suddenly, Jace’s phone exuded a slightly irritating tune. It continued as Jace continued to stare at Kylie quizzically.
“What?” he inquired, raising a confused eyebrow at Kylie. In reply, she rolled her azure eyes in exasperation.
“Just open it!”
With a humourless grin, Jace struggled to flip open the my-link and he scrolled the features down until he found a friend request from Kylie. Curiously, he pressed the red button with the words ‘decline’ and looked back up at Kylie expectantly.
“What!” She cried, glaring up at Jace suddenly. “How dare you decline my friend request? How rude of you,” Not waiting for Jace to reply, she stormed off to Will’s direction. “I bet Will is going to say yes! I LOVE THIS ISLAND!” Jace watched as she ran into Will, flashing another shiny phone – my-link – in his direction.
“Wow,” Jace muttered, to nobody in particular. Kicking the cement, he proceeded to wander the dock, edging closer to the crowd surrounding the concentrated dancer.
There were at least ten of Jade’s residents there, pumping their fists up into the air and cheering for Paris. He stood inconspicuously behind the crowd, watching as the dancer contorted her body into an impressive head spin. The actor had never been very fond of dance, but watching the dancer inspired him against his will, with the sheer euphoria lighting up her eyes. All Jace wanted, so bad, was to be distracted for once, to feel joy like that again, like the bliss reflected in her eyes. When Jace turned his head he saw the charming Leo already making conversation. To his amazement, Jace inaudibly sighed in unfamiliar, wistful hopelessness. Never could Jace be as charming as that, and even he could admit the truth of it. Never would he admit it, but he felt a sudden longing to be this charming person dancing with the girls and doing it with courage. He actually wanted to be Leo.
That’s when he saw the girl staring at him.
