Someone had the same problem and I just answered his query. Guys don't stop the game after Astrolab checkpoint. It sets the switch on the platform off. Play the game non-stop from where Ratash breaks off walls and corridors and where you jump off water columns and pillars and then reach Astrolab through traps and a couple of minor fights. Replay from that previous point and don't stop till you activate the lever that otherwise goes missing.
I just checked the issue for you mate [Lucky I still have it installed]. Stopping the game and playing later from Astrolab save is the problem. It misses the switch handle both in cutscene and lab. The only solution is to replay in continuity without switching off from previous save before Astrolab section. You will unfortunately have to replay the part where Ratash breaks off sections of palaces and makes you jump through water columns and pillars all over again including the section with traps before the Astrolab. I think it is not advisable to stop the game after reaching Astrolab and finish that part before saving further. Maybe it can be broken off after the lab starts revolving and makes you play a dicey challenge of getting across in 2nd half.

I am in the observatory, have flipped the golden switch and crossed the water pillars. The switch itself came up, but when I approach it, the Price wont grab it or anything. I am super frustrated. I went to the ubisoft help page and they recommended switching to backup autosave as opposed to autosave. Still nothing. Originally I didnt stop the game comming into the observatory, but after not being able to do anything, I turned it off and it now starts at the video sequence introducing the astrolade.

Hmmmm. Looks like this is a serious glitche that really works in different ways. Are you sure you pressed right click to make him hold the handle? Just check if you are using the correct set key to hold the switch. Try turning key settings to default and see which key works. Try playing from a couple of backed saves much before Ratash breaks floors and see if it still exists. I am afraid you could try re-installing or worse still play with a trainer. I had no internet connectivity at home initially when I played this game and so despite having a legit copy had to use a trainer to play the game since I got stuck at DRM hotspots a lot.
