This is the last time I will post on this thread as I am now fed up with having a discussion with the Ubisoft Technical Department that is no more than a joke!!!!.
Here is the latest reply over the online network error from that department....
Hello Maverick,
Thanks for your e-mail.
Your problem can be caused by a incompatibility with the OS. The games its NOT compatible with Windows 7.
We do apologise for the inconvenience. Please contact Official Ubisoft.
Kind regards
Ubisoft Technical Support
The only difference to the last reply was 'Please Contact Official Ubisoft'. It would now appear that the Technical Support Department is NOT an OFFICIAL Ubisoft Department.
Now consider this statement about the up and coming Silent Hunter V game that has been posted officially by Ubisoft.
Question: What if Ubisoft decides not run these online services in the future? Will my game stop working? What if Ubisoft decides not run these online services in the future? Will my game stop working?
Answer: If any service is stopped, we will create a patch for the game so that the core game play will not be affected.
Silent Hunter 4 was released In March 2007, is still the game that gives you the War in the Pacific, but it would appear their technical support department have already dropped it like a lead balloon.....
Make up your own mind about their commitment to SH5 once they have bled you for your money.
Maverick.

Hi SH4 Forum & Maverick in particular,
I have after finding all these comments, posted a help item at the support (or lack there of) and am awaiting reply. I will let you know if I receive anything further than your curt comments and instructions.
No doubt they would have trouble with someone running XP (being a supported platform) reporting the problem, although I would like to note SH4 is listed in the Ubi site as not officially compatible with Windows 7, but tested and found to work, ironically... Games Compatible with Windows 7
