I often attack lonely merchants so attacking convoys is new. Although, I once "ran" into a TF and popped a few fish before disappearing, so that doesn't count!

The convey is traveling from the NW. Do I turn into the convoy or try and cut them off by going top speed to an area perpendicular to a possible future position? The other question is when do I go to periscope depth? I have gone when the escorts were 5nm away, which I think is too far b/c I can't pass them below water.

    TIA!

Let me see, there is a post up here that goes about the handling of an enemy task force. Errr, this is the one "Is This Do-able?", there are already some good pointers in there. If you are not yet spotted i'd suggest to wait til after dark to atack. Less chance to be spotted by the dd's.

If you get all ships in range, the best thing is to check out the ships in the convoi. If there are Isé BB's in there i'd focus on them, they have a good weight and go down with 2 well placed torp's, If you decitde to do this, set your fish at 5 meters or around 16/18 Feet and open you tubes. Fire one fish between the first and second Batery on the bow, and the second one right behind the first "tower" or super structure. This will blow up the Ammo bunker on the first fish, creating a huge blast and it will tear up the Engine and fuel bay with the second fish. Giving it the final blow.

If it has carriers in it you can sink those with 3 fish, just ain around the center of the ship with a left to right differance of about 10 meters, or 33 feet. If there's a yamato in it, you might want to save your fish becouse it takes about 10 to 13 to sink em. At least that's my experiance, althou it will probably have sweet spots like the Isé. Unfortunatly i cant help you with that one.

Just try to get yourself in position of the center colom, enabeling you to take out the BB's or carriers with your Bow torpedoes and the cruisers with the aft ones.

Good luck on your mission and happy hunting!

Under different conditions, escorts will see you at varying ranges. Its best to make sure you get down long before they get close to you. I usually try to wait until I can see enough of the task force to call it in (and hopefully get orders to attack, since I will anyway and might as well get credit for it).

Remember, you can't travel at periscope depth or fast while underwater and expect to go undetected most of the times. Though I have managed to flank in underwater through gaps in the screen at times, it isn't usually sucessful. Getting out in front and lying deep while waiting for the escorts to pass is usually a good strategy.
