Think about it logically, how can you tell a hard-coded DVD disc to only run the setup on it 5 times, there is nothing that is burned on to it like a tally mark, nor would installing it on a different computer give it a clue that it's been installed.

The install key is the same for everyone thus there is basically no way to prevent you to install this game on different pcs 100 times or whatever, the only way would be if you wanted to reinstall game on your pc with harddrive not formatted, and what would be the point of this? This game doesn't use the protection that disallows multiple reinstalls etc so stop getting worried about that.
Many people may experience other problems due to starforce nature itself but not limited installs.

i just checked my system and No starforce drivers are installed. so how would it send info through the internet etc etc. this is panic for nothing people. It's not like MS windows activation and again i tested it on 6 different computers(3 @ home, 1 @ work and 2 @ a friends place) and it still works, they all got internet etc etc etc so............(**** i need to play more and stop solving urban legends about starforce on SHIII)

I'd like to see an official response to this topic. I was planning on buying the game this week but its also a game i can live without buying.
Not that me not buying will mean anything to anyone else except me for not supporting a protection scheme like this.

Hello all,
I’m from StarForce technical support department. I'm going to help UBI and pay attention to this thread. I’m ready to answer all questions regarding the protection system. Please, if you have any exact questions post them below. I will sometimes visit this forum and answer them.
Start from this one:
Q:
What happens after we have reached 5 hardware changes limit ? We have to buy the game again or do we have to give some proof that we are original buyers.
A:
It's not the question to us. We provide publishers with flexible activation system. It's up to them to set as many activations per serial number as they want to. In addition, it's also their decision what to do with the users which reached the limit.

Hey
I am eager to buy this game. I've been watching it online for weeks. Now, I was surfing around EB's website checking out information for when it will be available and to my dismay I noticed a review someone had left saying starforce (the Cd protection) will only let you install the game a total of 5 times? Is this true? Because if it is I can pretty much say goodbye to the game because A) I have three computers so there is three installs and B) I reformat them usually twice a year to give them a good thorough cleaning and if it only gives a max of 5 installs that will be bad. It would be awesome if someone could tell me if this is just someone blowing smoke or if it is true. Thank you your quick response is much appreciated.

COUGH bull s h i t COUGH
Thats what it is, just ignore the scare mongering.
Its just a glorified "Check the original DVD is in the drive". Thats all. There is NO ONLINE activation, check out my activation thread.
Also, seen as some people are having small problems with the activation, then sorry to say UBI, but let people check out the warez community. No doubt someone will rip out the activation pretty soon. Happened with GTA Vice City, the protection was 'causing problems so RockStar gave up and mentioned that people with the problem should use CD Cracks to get around the problem.

I am not one to criticize, but this is **** stupid, if this starforce thing is true. I am paying my good money to buy a game that i have followed since it was first thought up. I mean, Ubisoft is getting my money, and I think once I get my disk, its mine, and i can install it on as many computers, or as many times as i want. Yes, i understand the need to protect information, and to keep the disk original, as the devs have worked for months and months to create this.
Anyway, i doubt the accuracy of the Starforce claims. The only other way of knowing how many installs is to have a secondary program installed on the hard drive to count. I call that spyware, I will destroy that file if I find it (If I have to reinstall).

The limited number of installs is only from digitally distributed version of Silent Hunter III - not the DVD install.
