On my abit an8 nforce 4 rig I tried replacing the pci riser audio that comes with it with an audigy. I appeared to gain exactly 1 fps - so I cranked the sound quality and noticed the same hit I see with the pciex riser (soundmax). I've gotten the impression the audigy should buy me a few more fps than that - am I missing something?

Maybe you have sound hardware acceleration still on standard from the onboard? Check the dxdiag and set it to full acceleration if it's anything less. Is anything still installed (drivers?) from the onboard riser? Make sure windows is using the audigy as the prefered sound device if there's anything left of the onboard riser sound.

Not sure if the SoundMax cards had its' own APU or not. And if it didn't, and you have a high end cpu(fast), then you may not experience the increase in fr's that I did on a 2.4GHz cpu and replacing the SBLive! card with an Audigy 2. I got a 6 to 8 fps increase across the board in any mission I was flying, and a 5 fps increase in the BD track by making that upgrade.

most newer mobos are starting to incorporate seperate apu's that plug into the mobo. There are benefits in usage. To me most onboard sounds are very crappy but it's a personal opinion. I've played guitar since I was 10 yrs old so sound is a touchy subject with me on certain items. Overall though most mobos have taken on the older nforce 2 method and have realized less cpu usage as they had once before but lack the overall tonal quality IMO.

TRY TURNING THE VOLUME ALL THE WAY UP...It will most definitly increase your FPS...
