i was thinking of switching to the mustange from the 47 and tempist in warclouds for a change of pace and was tryn to do some research. what i have read on the net regarding the p-51D stang and the FW190 dora is basicly that at 20k "feet" the dora was a little faster but at 25k and up the stang had the advantge. i did just a little testing in game and found that not only was the stang slower at 25k but also got the overheat MSG faster. about 30 to 50 sec faster. should this be the case? i tested both aircraft with rad on auto.
Nope...the limit is at 33,000 feet or 10,000 meters. Even above that there is some modeling although it gets progressively less accurate. Since very little combat took place at these extreme altitudes there are no problems with the engine and handling a more typical 20,000 or 25,000 feet. If there is something wrong then its quite fixable in the current environment.Originally posted by Widowmaker214:

From what I've heard, since this was originally about the IL2, the flight models are geared towards lower altitudes and only really work up to angels 20. Above that its all screwy.
@Fordfan: Obviously you haven't provided test criteria but I would double check to ensure that your radiator was closed during the test. Its far less draggy on the Mustang than on most but its still a factor.
i have a screaming head ache right now but ill retest soon. but should not the rad be on auto. if for what ever resone the stang rad is more dragy that should not be a factor. Also why would the rad of the stang be more dragy?. i will test both ways how ever. my test will be p-51Dna and FW190 dora 1944 moddle. crimara, rads auto and closed. i will test FW190 with auto prop and stang at both 100% prop and 90%. any other settings any one would like for me to try?

p-51 prop 100% rad auto 685kmh
p-51 prop 100% rad closed 725kmh
note:i did test 90% prop pitch on the p-51 and found that it reduced speed by as much but not limated to 5 KMH. once i saw speed fal off i stoped testing that setting.
Fw190D rad auto 676KMH
FW190D rad closed 707KMH
note: from my testing and judgeing by eye only i noted the FW had a condidrable advantge in rate of excelaration up to its max speed.
it should be noted that in both planes i started climbing after setting up everything at 23000 ft. at full power wep on thay both got the overheat MSG before reaching 655kmh speed. Also the FW from what i could tell started haveing moter damnge when left unchecked with rad closed before mustang how ever i was able to cool the engien off and maintain a faster constant speed with out motor damnge.
from my testing i have found that if your in a stang and a dora is on your 6 and your already at a very high rate of speed and a cool motor at or aboave 25kft you can out run him but only for a fairly short time. given that the Dora piolet knows his craft. also what ever you do dont try to dive. for some resone the FW has a HUGE adv in dive excelaration and speed retention even over that of a p47. how ever in the 47 you have a higher dive speed limit before you start loseing parts![]()
You can get either plane up to alt and nearer full speed at lower settings before going to max.
I understand that when Charles Lindberg had the P-38 groups cruise at 30" MAP and 1400 RPM, the
range they were able to operate at increased from 400 mile radius to 900 mile radius. The speed
was not so much lower, the plane just ran far more efficiently.
Efficient running makes less heat so when you say that 90% prop speed gets you 5 kph less top
end then why not bring the P-51 up close before pouring on the coals?
