I have a problem with the charming and very innovative denizens of the underworld, i.e., they are invading houses rather too frequently bent on mayhem, and I am indisposed to be tortured, robbed, killed, or generally put through the mill Tarentino-style. So, I am in the market for a hand cannon in the .45 manstopping caliber. After some shopping I am interested in the classic 1911 Colt .45 or the Glock .45. I would be interested in any advice because it's been about half a century since I last fired a gun.
Shotgun
Unless your good at aiming a handgun at moving targets in the dead of night which may or may not be shooting at you whilst adrenalin is ripping through your body.
If so Ive heard the Glocks are the best for reliability. Oh yeah and guns are useless if they can break into your house in the dead of night and bash you over the head with a frying pan whilst your sleeping. Get an alarm system if its really that bad. (You can even get cheap alarms which you attach to your windows that go off if there broken) Or even trip wires with shotgun blanks attached to them. You name it there are a lot more usefull things you can do before you get a gun.
Gotta agree with Aimail101. A short barreled shotgun ( as in a deer gun ) is very effective at close range. Even a load of bird shot at a few paces is devastating. A plus too if you live in close proximity to neighbors as it won't penetrate your walls. Of course buckshot would be even more effective.
Have glass break alarms on every window. Front door pretty Maginot. Yes, I've been advised to go with a Remington pump-action. The thought occurred to me that after I'd "dispersed" the miscreants (either to the hereafter or whatever) there might not be much left of the domicile. Excellent point about penetration---don't fancy taking out somebody next door with the Colt or Glock---will a .45 really carry that far?
Personally, I don't like the Colt in that in it's classic versions even as small as my hands are the grip simply feels too thin and on top of that the safety grip lever pad I never felt good about as well (always wonder if I'm squeezing it tight enough so just one more thing).
In kind I prefer a double action weapon....Granted, that shifts first to second round pull if used as such, yet I don't want to have to mess with a hammer if in a rush.
Now oddly prefering automatics (semi), for by the bed use I actually prefer a revolver (don't ask me why, just do). However of all the .45's we have here I think I like an older S&W we have though am not sure of the number. Has a slightly stagger stacked clip making it a tad wider/thicker, and wrap around grip which in iteself I suppose could make up for width on any and feel comfortable (as a narrow frame and wide grips I still get the same narrow feeling).
In either case......IMLTHO a short barreled 12Ga. "pump" shotgun with 000 Buck, improved cyl. choke and an empty chamber my first choice......The racking of it deterring most encounters by sound alone. People miss with pistols when under pressure and at such ranges it's no scattergun.

There wont me much left if you get sued after a .45 round blows through your wall and then through your neighboughs.Although you could use subsonic ammo. Put a lock on your bedroom door as well if it really is as bad as you make out. Where are you living, Manchester?
The fact of the matter is if two guys break into your house with vests your more likely to blow their heads off with a shotgun.
ehhh...lead balls flatten out easy...Jacketted lead bullets not as much though they'll not be charging through as many walls as you think as say a rifle will.Originally posted by leitmotiv:
Right about the panic factor, BFmeisterin. I'm swinging towards the shotgun even if massive structural damage might happen.
Average lead shot will probably not even make it to a third piece of sheet rock, let alone through outer walls.
