USS Nimitz masquerading as a speedboat in a slamlom course...who'd a thunk it !Apparently these babies are not only really fast but a lot more maneuverable than you'd think...hope they have those planes lashed down well.

I still remember seeing it when it was first getting built. That thing towered above everything else in the shipyard.

Here she is with deck mounted spoilers up. You know, to keep her *** in the water.

A CVN at flank can practically move laterally. It's fairly insane.
I don't have any sea legs whatsoever and I am fairly certain I wouldn't survive such a maneuver (which is actually rather sad as I come from a Navy family. Give me a plane any day. At least there aren't sky sharks or colossal celestial squid.)

When I was onboard her back in the day we used to make "speed runs" at night up to the Gulf of Oman. I swear there was a rooster tail as high as the flight deck coming off her stern. Well, maybe as high as the jet shop, but dang it, it was high....

I believe all new carriers are out through that manuever as part of their sea trials. I am not sure what it is supposed to test, but I guess it is a pretty wild ride. There would not be any aircraft on the ship and only a skeleton crew.

Invincible lost its ready alert fighter over board whilst manouvering like a speed boat during the Falklands War. The jet just slid right off the deck in a turn, the pilot ejected and was recovered in a very bad mood.
