Thanks for all the advice guys!
I picked up a wireless Cybord EVO from ebay for $30, brand new and sealed, even. Now I just have to hurry up and wait for it to ship before I can start dogfighting.
I tried fly a few missions using keyboard inputs, and I don't think that's going to work very well.
To keep the discussion going, does everyone here like the HOTAS setup that has one? Is it really worth having a separate throttle stick when one can keep one hand on the keyboard?

Oh, thx for the thread & answers. My Thrustmaster Top Gun is showing its ugliest side lately and likely I'll need to replace it any time... although maybe my budget is a bit short for a X-45 after buying a new rig, the Cyborg EVO looks fine.
(BTW, why do they design such stuff with fancy-style, appealing to teens? What teen is goin' to buy a 80$ flight-sim joystick? Some soberty/elegance would be appreciated)
