I'm a little surprised that this thread needs bumping - i.e. so few responses.Originally posted by VikingGrandad:

Maybe there hasn't been much interest because the thread needs a better name... RedTerex - why not change the title to something like "SH4 Rumours - what do you think?" or "What do you want from SH4?".
"REF: Silent Hunter" sounds a bit vague/dull. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
LOL True, the title is a little boring. Some good info in here.
OK, here's an honest opininion from somebody who bought SH3,played it, loved it, and hasn't played it in months (I went back to flight simming 100%).
If there is any hope in this game being successful (financially), I think the proper approach for SH4 is as follows:
SH4 should be released in the same manner as Pacific Fighters was for the IL2 game. You see, there is IL2 Forgotten Battles, and there was an expansion pack called the "Aces Expansion Pack". After much clamor for the Pacific Theatre, "Pacific Fighters" was released.
Here is where it get's interesting. Pacific Fighters is a unique game, because it is both a stand-alone game and an add-on at the same time. A buyer has the option of installing Pacific Fighters as an add-on to his already existing install of IL2FB + AEP or installing it seperately as it's own game (or both for that matter).
My suggestion is that SH4 be taken from the American viewpoint in the pacific..with one exception: SH4 should also include destroyers (aka destroyer command). By itself, this would be an excellent game. However, when merged (installed as an add-on), it could add a few ships to allow for proper naval engagements in the atlantic.
The future is multiplayer, plain and simple. COOP play is fun (we do a lot of it at http://www.theartofwarfare.net) with fictional wolfpack campaigns, etc.. However, a lot of the excitement is missing when you and your friends are fighting AI. The ONLY thing that can save this series is an axis vs allies scenario and this will have to include ships.
though i agree that making the game strictly based on the japanese navy would not be a good idea.. i think it would be a good idea to have a simulation based on both sides of the conflict.. the japanese navy had many different types of submarines (more than any other nation during the war). here are some facts: http://www.combinedfleet.com/ss.htmOriginally posted by RedTerex:
A Japanese submarine orientated game would not deliver the same aspects of playability due to the "historically accurate" fact that they were weak and ineffectual and never made any impression on the state of the war in the Pacific.
in terms of simulation and a challenge, i'd rather be on the side of the underdogs, but thats just my opinion. i'd love to see midget subs in action or the kamikaze torpedoes
all these will add a different environment to the sim and interest more people.
The one thing you guys MUST fix is this death screen business. By that I mean, dont just yank me out of the game and tell me I died.
PLEASE LET ME DIE!!![]()
AoD offered the chance to scuttle the boat and have crew abandon ship. Incorporate this. When mortally wounded, AoD let me fight to save my boat all the way to crush depth. Incorporate this. Incorporate more player control over the sub. I want to know I have full up bow planes while I am screaming through the water at flank speed trying to control critical flooding.
Something happened just now and I was so happy, I took some kind of damage to the control room, I think it killed the crew there, I didnt see em, but what I did see was FLOODING!! glorious wonderful pipes spitting water in 3D like there was no tomorrow. I was about to go grab my toolbox and get my plumbers wrench, and that STUPID dang death screen came up. Nooooooooooooo!!!.
All of these comments about turning SH into a more "action" oriented game is exactly what is wrong with the gaming industry today. Quite frankly, I'd like to see more realism-oriented simulation. SH is a rare breed. The last thing we need is for the last realism-oriented game to convert itself into another action series.
That being said, there's too much left undone in the current SH to be talking about SH4. No game is complete without an expansion pack tailoring to the requests of the gamers. As it stands, SH (despite being a truly magnificent game) doesn't even include many of the aspects that AoD incorporated a decade ago (wolf packs come to mind). Give us an expansion that incorporates wolf packs, milch cows, and maybe even a chance for multiplayer DD v. Uboat action. The only other truly great realism-oriented game (RTW) released an expansion incorporating many new features; it's time that SH did the same.
