Hi. Im in my first campaign and my hit ratio with torpedos is less than 30%.
I shoot... I miss. This is with crew auto targeting. All I have to do is lock and press fire. But I still miss.
I tried different ranges, angles of attack, etc. Its pretty frustrating wasting all them torpedos and getting very few kills.
The deck gun is my savior, I never miss with it on manual... but weather very seldom allows for its use. And I dont think I'd try it vs a warship.
Can anyone provide me some tips for actually getting some impacts with the easy setting. This cant be hard... others do it on realistic mode.... argggh

If you're using the auto-targeting and lock functions, that should take care of azimuth issues: ....but remember to keep an eye on the draft of the vessels you're shooting at.
Some don't draw as much water as the default torpedo setting.
Try for the best "setup" you can manage: ....under 1500 meters, and as close to 90 degrees as possible.

Well, one thing you should do is select the torpedo tube your going to fire when using the uzo or periscope view. then hit the q key to open the torpedo door for that tube. then just fire like you have been.
If your not opening your torpedo door before hand you will almost always get a miss cause the door has to open and your torpedo is alittle behind of what it should be

Most of my misses are near misses... and I never open the tube doors first. Thanks for that tip... it sounds promising !

Try that diemax. Another tip Ill give you is if your in rough seas and you cant get a good side shot and you plan to do a under keel shot, be sure to set the depth 2 to 2.5 meters below what the draft is of that given vessle. That way you go under the keel and not hit the bilge keel which will deflect your torpedo almost every time. Also set it up for magnetic pistol if youve been using impact. Unless your like in 1939 - 1940 then go with impact cause the Magnetic has more problems in those years. Another thing i noticed is in rough seas stick to under keel shots. ive had alot of torpedos explode prematurely after they shot out of the water and then went to reenter the water after a large wave.

Are you using magnetic or impact pistol? The magnetic pistol (allowing for the occasional 'dud') has more effect, if it's set at the correct running depth - no more than 2 meters below (or greater than) the draught of the target. So make sure you check the target draught in the recognition book and set your depth appropriately.
If you spend too much time with your periscope up (or your tower broaching the surface if it's rough) the target may see you and alter course and speed, or just start zigzagging - so keep an eye on the TDC plot or the angle on the bow of the target and watch for any turning towards or away.
Try to make sure you're on a steady course and speed when you fire, and also follow the tips above ......
open the tube door before firing (as above),
an optimum range is perhaps 700 to 1000 meters, (longer range can let the target see the torpedo's wake and the target may alter course/speeed accordingly).
Try to get your bows heading at the point that the torpedo should hit, so the torpedo doesn't have to alter course too much.

If your going to do long range shots you can use a steam torpedo at night time long as there is no moon. I havent had one of mine detected at night yet. Also if your shooting long range shots during the day remember to use an electric torpedo they dont have as much of a visable wake as the steam. But remember to stay 3000 - 3500 meters away (max) from the target anything more than 3500 meters and you run the risk of the torpedo running out of power.

Thanks for the tips.
I just tried a patrol and had a much better outcome. I engaged 4 targets and sunk all 4. Out of about 6 shots only 1 missed... well bounced really because I was in closer than 300m.
The open doors trick sure made the difference. I also switched from Magnetic to Impact and set torp speed to fast. Its early 1940 and things are looking much better now that I got past my torpedo incompotence.

Thats great.
Once 1941 starts kicking in, you can start using the magnetic pistol instead of the impact. The magnetic pistol is still not profected in 1940 especially early 1940.
Another tip is if your less than 2000 meters away i belive it is, and your 90 degrees to the course the target is taking you can target the keel, engines, fuel bunker, ect and if you do that, then your able to target the fuel bunker on the inbound vessles going to england and your able to break their back and send them to the bottom with one torpedo basicly. Dont try it on ships leaving england cause all you would do is fill up an empty bunker with water and you would need another one. use a keel shot on those.
