I've had Il2 46 working fine since it came out, but I've just had a motherboard replacement and a complete XP Home reinstall.

I click a.exe on disc, and Installshield comes into operation. It stutters a bit, to my mind, then goes through the initial installation and placement permissions. I get as far as the green screen and the installation indicator, but this remains at 0%. After a while I get an error message –

˜The system cannot read from the specified device'

It offers a retry or cancel. After about three retries, I cancelled and I got Error Message –

    ˜ERROR: -30. Preparing...'

...which I click to make the whole nightmare go away.

Tried out the disc on my wife's computer, and it installed fine, so I know that the disc's OK. (And, no, it is not acceptable to just play it on that...)

    We both have Pioneer DVD-RW. Mine's DVR-111D and her's is a 112.

I seem to remember some time ago, a flurry of posts about DVD-RWs not accepting 1946 because of anti-copying software or registry problems. Anyone got any ideas about this or links to fixes?. Remember, I've just had a complete reinstall of XP and a new motherboard.

Also, if you could bear in mind that I'm NOT a techie. If you could word any answers in LaymanSpeak, I'd be really grateful.

    Thanks

    Hi falling-bird,
I'm no techie either, the only thing I could think of when reading your post is to maybe try the regular setup.exe on the disc as opposed to the a.exe?

Try updating your firmware for your DVD player. It seems yours is a little older than your wifes given the model numbers. So the firmware on her DVD drive is probably up to date.

Detailed instructions here, a little past halfway down the page, two posts by FoolTrottle:

This has worked for many a m8. And the way it is acting by at least trying to install the sim, I would say this will fix you right up.

Well you could always 'nick' her CD/DVD drive...

Trying a firmware update as per Quazi's suggestion is the least troublesome route, but if that doesn't cure it (or no firmware available) you have that option.

If it comes down to it il2 does not need to be "installed", you can copy the folder from your wifes lappy and run it just fine on your pc.

    Just in case:
    Pioneer DVR 111D Firmware
You want the top one v1.29, download location 1
and you REALLY WANT this - it will add capabilities you don't have now...
click the download location 1 link, sownload the file, run it (it's an .exe) reboot computer and try install again.
If you just copy it from one box to another you will most likely have problems playing online because of missing registry entries.

Really? Never had this happen, I think the only problem I've seen from this manuever is if you download a paid expansion it won't recognize that it's installed. Have you seen the online play issues? What happens? Got my curiousity up, lol.

There's a chance HL will not 'accept' il2fb.exe as the runtime for the game... you can look for it, find it, but it won't accept it

Really, wow, learn something new everyday . This is relatively rare though right? I have quite a few m8's who keep a copy of thier il2 folder on a disk or a thumb drive so they don't have to redo all thier skins and missions etc if they reformat, never seen that before.

Same here. Been playing from a copy of a copy for a very long time now and have never had problems with HL or anything else for that matter.
