No, the problem is that you do not understand your strategic purpose. You are not an anti-aircraft picket destroyer. You are a submarine.Originally posted by WarriorWithin7:
"I will not" what? What will not??Shoot the enemy? Why not if it's the most effective way to destroy them?
The strategic purpose of a submarine is to use stealth to approach and destroy large enemy capital ships and merchant marine at very little expense. In effect, we are using cheap and expendable submarines to eliminate expensive and irreplaceable enemy ships.
You would reverse the equation by putting your relatively expensive and difficult to replace submarine up against the relatively cheap and replaceable airplanes for recreational pursuit. That is not your role in battle.
As Admiral, I think it's appropriate that I take you out of your submarine and put you in command of a picket destroyer, which is made to protect the fleet with an excellent array of AA guns. Congratulations on your new assignment.
Oh, one more thing. The kamikazes love those little destroyers. Your life expectency in battle is on the order of fifty minutes. Have a good day, sir.
What do you mean it's only 1942 and there are no kamikazes yet? I'm a bleedin' admiral! I have a staff to tell me what the date is.
I see you have already put yourself as an Admiral who controls the subs?!Good imagination you have thereI take it as a joke
I can't see in the discussion where I mentioned something about the submarine's purpose so I don't get it why you think that I don't know the submarines' purposes? The same thing about kamikazes.I didn't say anything about kamikazes, did I?Yet thanks for dgrayson's help, oh and Starforce3 has a nice strategy
and to the other guys thanks too

Just to get my two cents worth in. I've noticed that when enemy aircraft are found far from enemy controlled land bases, that the answer is either air scouts from enemy CA's or CL's or actual patrol aircraft from CV's. Taking particular notice of the direction the aircraft are heading (before they spot your boat), you will have a good idea of where the source of the aircraft are either coming from or heading to. It's a 50/50% chance that in one direction or the other the source can be found.
I had been assailed by enemy flyovers, ducking to periscope depth each time. I noticed there seemed to be a pattern to the flyovers east to west so I turned west. In a while my sonar man began to pick up warship screws, long range, so I cheated and took to the Free Camera mode to see what was out there.

The task force held 5 carrier's! (Ok, I admit the picture was taken after I sunk one of the aircraft carrier's). Anyway, don't take lightly the aircraft direction of travel. There's a reason why the aircraft are where they are, just hunt them down like the game name implies. The developers have their outstanding gameplay show through at times, the aircraft don't just appear from thin air.
That's just the answer that I wanted to read.I have the same opinion the direction is important.Sometimes I have the feeling that the aircraft is going in circles just to confuse me and to mistake their bearing. But underwater that's less possible I think. So there realy are carriers, aren't there? My question to you CapnScurvy is if there was a radio contact reported about the carriers?Or you are playing on easy and everything is visible? Was it marked on the world map?The task force held 5 carrier's! That's a good question, regarding the radio contact report. I didn't remember one so to double check, I reloaded the save point for the encounter. There was no previous radio report of this particular task force. There was one report of an enemy task force heading in a different direction and 100's of miles away, but nothing was known of the particular task force that I came across.Originally posted by WarriorWithin7:

The only map information for the carrier task force appeared after my sonar man gave me the bearings of his discovery. The map showed nothing until his sonar pick up. When it did show on the map it simply read "task force, medium speed, east north east (ENE)". The largest clue I had regarding the carrier's were from the large amount of flyovers of aircraft in a remote section of ocean. Again, the aircraft's direction of travel gave me a clue to the basic area to look for the source. I could have picked "turn right, not left"; I just happened to choose correctly.
I was playing a stock unmodded game, set on easy. My purpose was to test for specific amounts of tonnage sunk to see what awards the game engine would give me. I was testing for my U.S. Medals Fix that I've just released. I found another interesting point to the game that shows the depth of it's development. The game gives specific targets greater rank for the calculations of awards. I found I received a higher ranking award for less tonnage sunk because of the difference in ship quality. In other words, one CV sunk will get you a higher award greater than say three DD's, and a couple of merchants, even if the DD's and freighters have a greater tonnage total! This game still amazes me with it's depth of game play.

I give into your results for the aircraft activity. However, I don't recall ever reading of these types of encounters being regular guaranteed occurances, which my gameplay experience seemed to indicate. I switched (Wasn't that a cigarette add?) to TM(O) for reasons such as this.
Vlaba
Vlaba, you know what they say, "even a blind hog will find an acorn once in a while". Beleive me I'm one of the biggest critics of some of the flaws in the stock game, (mast height accuracy for manual targeting, the medals issue) but I blame Ubisoft for pushing the game out before it was ready, just to make a buck. The patch 1.5 addon is proof of their need to squeeze more out of us.
But, the men back in Romania know how to make a great complex game, with little added features like having a carrier task force sending patrol craft radiated from it for an observant player to pick up on it's source. The game play is sometimes outstanding in it's depth. Just keep the guys holding the purse strings out of the picture until the work is done.
Yes, Warrior, my Admiral Lockwood impersonation is a long-running joke. Usually people come in to him with some trophy or other and he rains on their parade. "You sank that aircraft carrier, sure, but your head was filthy!"Originally posted by WarriorWithin7:

As usual Capn Scurvy had the good advice there. The devs were pretty good with air traffic and planes mean some source of those planes is supplying them. Investigating that source could bring big rewards.
Sorry if my bad writing didn't tell you for sure I was having some fun with your post. I can't resist that kind of thing.

@CapnScurvy! That screenshot is magnificent! Is that the stock game? Looks fabulous.
Hey Double R, you never know who will pop up on these forums!!Good to hear from you. I've learned a long time ago your bite is more of a toothless nibble
BUT your wisdom is always welcome!! @WarriorWithin, believe me RR is worth listening to, his insite is always fresh and provoking.
Yes, the image is stock but the camera height and angle could have been better with a modded parameter. I know there was a post here on this forum regarding "Where are all the carriers?" and just by luck I ran into the whole fleet. I saved this game to use for my medals tests and that's why I still have the proof carriers do exist in the stock game.
