Don't worry about what to tell the admiral, Wolfe. As far as I'm concerned, you executed a textbook amphibious assault on the enemy's beach fortifications. You just have to know how to explain it, that's all. Hmmmm, it was enemy held territory, right?
Regarding your second pic, I experienced a similar event after I ambushed a TF from a less than stellar position (it passed right over me). The lead DD took a direct hit in the aft by two bombs from a Val that was aiming for me (right beneath the DD).

Yea, that was it.

Here's another funny one. I sunk one Y and had this one dead in the water..You know me, tried to find a way to sink it, so I sat right beside it and JP planes would come by to bomb me and actually hit it several times. It later started smoking, scared it would blow up beside me and kill me, I left...For the heck, I tried all my DG ammo from far away...just wouldn't go...

Funny, all the guns stay pointed at my scope.
