My Grandfather was in the CEF 1st Btn. during WW1 and served in both the Somme and Passchendaele! He was actually wounded in Passchendaele and sent home with schrapnel in his arm and head. My Great Uncle also served in the CEF as well. Not sure where though...
My GGF Served in the Light Horse (the same unit from "Charge of the Light Brigade) during the Zulu wars.
My Uncle was a photographer in Lancaster's during the 2nd World War (RCAF) and I had a cousin who lost his life while serving with the Royal Ulster's during the D Day Invasion. He was a pathfinder from what I know.

My GGG-Grandfather (Israel Harding) won the VC. My Grandfather served in the RFC in WW1 (ground-crew and occasional observer). My father hosed mashed bodies out of a/c in the RAF (don't know why, he served in Cyprus, and I don't know of any war that was going on out there in the late fifties).

My grandpa (dad's side) was with Lake Superior Reg . I got his military records from archives and saw he was in England but didn't see any action. He was in his 40s with three kids at home so that's understandable.
My grand uncle on my Dad's side died at Vimy.
My mothers side of the family; I had an uncle in the Airforce; radar tech I think.
I just retired from Canadian Navy after 24 years. Highlight was serving on HMCS Terra Nova in the first Gulf War Aug 90 - Apr 91. Feels weird being 42 and I can live on my pension; but I am actually in college fulltime on the government's dime! (law clerk)

My mothers grandfather served as a veterinarian in cavalry ("White side")in 1918 (Finnish civil war). This sort of history, because he was the first man killed in his unit. After a short combat the cavalry withdrew and he stayed there to take care of wounded horses. Heâ´s comrades had called him and warned him, that the "reds" would kill him. He replied that "brother would not kill a brother". Later they found him lying dead, killed with a bayonet.
Motherâ´s uncle (whom we all called just uncle) was an infantryman in Winterwar (1939-1940), got encircled by russians, lied down in a destroyed trench for four days and three nights, got frostbite, but made it home. In Continuation war (1941-1944) he served as a radio operator under the high command of Finnish Army. There he made history: He happened to be in his shift at the time, when an allied convoy was on itâ´s way to Murmansk. He cought a british radiomessage. We (in my family) have been told that this was the first evidence the Axies ever got conscerning the Murmansk Convoys!
My grandfather served as a cook in swedish speaking troops (Finnish, not swedish troops). He fought his war in Carelia.
My other grandfather served during the Continuation War as a clerk in a Finnish consentration camp (for Russian prisoners of war), got nervous breakdown and was sent home by late summer in 1941 just after few weeks of serving.
I myself made my military service in the Finnish Navy in 1983-1984. I served on a 74 meters long ship, which was called a "Gunboat". In general this kind of ships would be called small corvettes or something - I suppose. Once we were practising with depth charges. First we dropped 50 kg bombs, small ones. Next we dropped 200 kg bombs and we made a mistake. Our speed was a bit too low and after the first explosion we cot light damage on our ship. She went to dry dock and none of us was injured. We were lucky!
Have a nice day,
