Great post Boosh.... I remember when I first came here. This was like another world to me. This was my first forum. The pilots lounge was a madhouse.... LOL. The first plane I flew was an IL2 of course. I still remember that one of the things initially that impressed me with IL2 was the sound and the "look". The way flak sounded when it exploded.... and the way the puffs of smoke seemed to disintegrate in the wind.. I remember watching a track and a P-39 had a wheel blown off by a flk burst ..... the first time I realized I not only had externals... but a pannable zoomable 360 degree external..... and the flybys.... the fact that if I was in too much of a spin bailing out was impossible..... inertia pinning me in the pit.... the first time I noticed the floating gunsight.. as opposed to the static ones I was used to. The first night on HL. I ran into Redwulf 1.... he helped me get off the ground.... the first personal skins I had.... Redtail P-39s & Las made by Painter.... Smoke Jags little short stories complete with illustrations..... RBJ...... The Pigs..... The AVG.. I actually thought of joining them for a hot minute.... but then I decided that since there was no Redtail presence here.... it was fertile ground. I have met more great folks, read more good books, spent more money and had more fun than I could have ever imagined I would that day in the sim aisle of the same Best Buy that I ironically wound up working PT at 3 years later, looking at this Russian sim.. IL2.... that I could now run since I upgraded my PII 233MHZ to a 1.4GHZ AMD...complete with a R900Pro and 768M of PC133RAM... all for the much anticipated CFS3 after having it recommended to me by a guy named Phil that I never saw again. After biting this apple.... everything else seemed like just a game.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You pushed the right button here.... Out come the flags. .

Ah! 5 years.. of filling other planes with lead.
Nothing much has changed, except now that I do this stuff in my sleep.
I'd think the best thing is to see the MS-Sim and FPS die-hards convert to IL2. (SH3 has had the same effect).
These are truely EPIC games that have kept me away from pub-crawling and other forms of entertainment . After all when work is finished, it's a mad rush to get home to 'fly/sail'.

    Well done to the Developers

Did you notice any difference with the FM and DM and the sound compared to todays great great grandchildren of the original version..I did retry the demo along time ago but it did'nt have Track ir so i struggled with it.

Like Bearcat99, this was my first forum. IL2 original was the 1st online game I played on my own computer. <b style="color:black;background-color:#a0ffff">Ubi[/b] forums were the 1st I began to read. It took me a couple of years to work out that I needed to register. I was a complete computer noob (big time).

    I remember:

-going to a game shop to buy 'a combat flight sim'. Choosing IL2 simply because the screenies on the back of the box looked the best.

-getting home after buying IL2 and realising after setup that I needed a joystick

-being so totally baffled at all the keyboard controls.

-realising that having built plastic die-cast model aeroplanes as a kid did not give me the piloting edge I had imagined.

-being known on the <b style="color:black;background-color:#a0ffff">ubi[/b] servers.

-how entertaining the <b style="color:black;background-color:#a0ffff">Ubi[/b] 'chatbox' was between flights.

-names: TonyT, EyesBlack, Avingalaugh, Zebo, Stein, NZ_Tui, sean_penns_***, FU_Crash, Lerxster, Little-Red, Toxic_Tiger, SummerKing, Lifetap, Tatsit... and Badsight being new.

-being accused of vulching. I had vulched, for the first time, I didn't know it was frowned upon (I even didn't know the term 'vulch'), and I felt the wrath of some older hands come down on me. I was a bit scared.

-my first kill. I don't actually remember it, but I remember how elated I felt.

-news of the coming release of Forgotten Battles, the excitement I felt at that time has been unsurpassed to this day (for a software product I mean).

-having a week long sickie from work when I did get FB.

BC - you nailed it well...
Remember sitting bored at work at night and I stumbled accross this forum and was hooked by the screen shots, the stories and all the different (okay, downright strange) personalities.
Remember looking at a screenie of a He111 with the crew running away thinking "no way that is real - it's a doctored shot" - then finding out it was real.
First time on HL getting my clocked cleaned by the B239 (wft? killed by a buffalo?).
Learning that USSR planes were not all ****.
First time in a coop with BlairGowrie and others thinking "Holy ****, I'm flying and talking to others at the same time!". My favourite memory: the first time my wife rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath when I yelled at her to come see a Trak I made.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
