    I put it into an online German to English translator...and it came back with "Yes indeed Mr. Kaleun"! I am willing to bet this isn't an exact translation!

    It means pretty much Yes Captain

    Jawohl is a word that has diffrent meanings like yes or you are right all depends to what question or answer it is used.

    Why the Germans called the Skippers of a U Boat Kaleun is a question I have pondered myself for many years and I'm German . Just never came around to asking anybody .

    It's a short form (easier to say) of "Kapitänleutnant" (try saying that in full every time the captain asks you a question - you'll understand why they use "kaleun")

    Kaleun= short for Kapitänleutnant (Captain-Lieutenant)

    Jawohl, Herr Kaleun = Yes captain, basically. Herr basically meaning sir or mister, shows respect.
