Hi all,
A question for Sorlim. (ComDev)
How are we progressing with getting together the 'First Aid' Mod pack that you discussed in an earlier discussion?
I know others have made great suggestions for useable mods, but i would like to see what you recommend as a collection of 'fixes'.
Patiently awaiting a reply.
It's moving along quite slowly. Between my other assignments, not being able to get any of the people that worked on SH5 involved in any way and the community's reluctancy to help make such a fixing bundle because, they say, this might encourage Ubisoft to drop support... I'm really the only person that's working on it and I have to test and also see how I may package it all. I can pretty quickly provide a simple list of what I think is a must but that might pose some problems for players that are not so knowledgeable with the aspects of modding.
It's a real shame that the SH5 dev. team do not wish to be involved. I think this may cement people's opinions about the lack of support for this title and possibly future Ubisoft purchases. For what it is worth (and politics aside), more support is needed from dev's. when things go wrong with their product...not less!
For a team who claimed to be so passionate about SH5, this is a real slap in the face to the Silent Hunter faithful. I had been hoping that Ubisoft as a corporation, may have had some more devoted developers working amongst their ranks. I do appreciate your efforts Sorlim, but i feel (as you may now) that you have walked into the lions den without a whip!
I can understand too, why the modders are witholding support at this time. Why should they do Ubisoft's work? I too wish Ubisoft to come to understand the damage they are doing to their customers, but they are their own worst enemy at the moment.
I do not wish to offend any of the modders with all the hard work they have put into the SH series, but as a complete novice with no experience (or great knowledge for that matter) of the German U-Boats, what would you recommend as essential mods Sorlim?
You misunderstood. The SH5 devs really do want to help but they have a lot of work to do for the projects they've been assigned to. They are fully booked (overtime, even) and they couldn't do anything except just a few hours of mod testing during their own free time. It's actually what I'm doing too.
From all of my talks with the devs it was crystal clear that not only do they want to bring all of this to a close but also carry the Silent Hunter series further in any way possible!
About which mods to use, now here is where we get deeper into my dilemma. Even among the mods that I consider must-haves there might be some that are unnecessary in specific cases. For example, if you're a more casual player who does not use manual targeting, the fact that the stadimeter is buggy will not affect you. So there would be no reason to install the mod that fixes this issue. This really changes the situation to a per-case problem from a one-size-fits-all.
As for the crashes, this is also a per-user problem with countless variables. I've created a sticky, it's skinny so far, but I'll be maintaining it with whatever info I can get from tech support. Which, by the way, is still everybody's best bet.
My appologies for the misunderstanding re developers.
I hope they can achieve the neccessary fixes for everyone's sake, but I am sure many will be skeptical until they see results.
Regarding the mods to select, how about selecting ones that bring the game to a point where it can be played as it was intended?
So from that point of view, the stadimeter should be fixed too, regardless of use, (unless of course the fix causes other, more serious issues.)
Thanks for the response Sorlim...still hoping for an adequate resolution to this for all parties involved.![]()
It's a welcome glimmer of hope on the horizon, sorlim. Sinking your teeth into this is admirable, but I must caution you after reading THIS THREAD
Advising people to shut down their firewall and A/V to play a game that "requires" an active internet connection is not the best solution to anyone's problems with this game. Even if the players with probs have issues with their rigs. That alone should inform you that not everyone who buys a game from Ubisoft is hardware capable or knowledgeable in the ins and outs of programming, or even their OS.
So, if you really really wish to screw up a novices' rig, simply tell them how to access the registry and turn them loose on it. You will be cussed by many I'm sure.
It is my educated opinion that the only first aid mod pack that will work properly will need to come from the Devs. Considering their previous track record... well I'm not going to hold my breath.
On a side note: I have just completed a new rig build that is more than capable of running SH V but, I will not be buying it.
Read my sig for the reason.
Herein lies my problem. With me being the only one testing for these things, it's not easy. Some people have posted the list of mods they use together without problems but this is far from a certainty that it will not be problematic.Originally posted by simonjh16302:

An active internet connection alone cannot get your system infected out of the blue. The Windows worms that have caused major headaches should be a thing of the past since Microsoft has patched the problems a long time ago. And even if new self-propagating viruses appeared, I suspect firewalls will miss them again just like they have missed the ones from the past.Originally posted by Wolferz:

I'll add to that thread that players should keep their Windows installations up to date with the latest security bulletins from Microsoft. They should scan their systems and then disable the anti-virus before starting the game. Also stop all other programs running and then stop the firewall. This should leave no back door for any types of attacks to come in.
I reiterate that the people in the tech support forum know much more than me and are the best bet.
It has been over a month since this topic was first breached by Sorlim. Still no list and just like the Ubisoft there will always be an excuse. If you really want a decent MOD list check out the one that Eoweth put together, in one thread he/she actually states which ones he/she uses, I followed most of his reccomendations and as a result this game is mostly playable. THANKS EOWETH!Originally posted by simonjh16302:

Good Luck and Good Hunting!
As a former tech support guru I can truthfully say....."HOGWASH!" They don't know any more than the information resources they have at their disposal and those resources can not pinpoint a problem if the problem is a sloppily coded game or the user is a loose nut behind the keyboard. I could provide more definitive answers if I actually had a copy of SH V. Again, read my sig.An active internet connection alone cannot get your system infected out of the blue.
