@ Geoff - Luth was indeed an interesting chap. after reading this book he's been my favourite Kaleun. It's a good read which I recommend whole heartedly. His untimely demise is quite tragic really.

That said, I have to admire you Geoff nonetheless for your 63 days! In reality I get panicky if the bathroom door lock jams!

OK - Open floor everybody, if anyone has a new question please do post it up. I am away on business for the next 24/36 hours so I'll leave it up to you fine Kaleuns to keep the quiz rolling

An obvious guess... Johann Mohr? It's hard to make out the captain's face in the photo.

Sorry Jochen - I forgot about the boat number!

OK, if you insist, I'll take the next question...

What type of U-boat is this?

I'll take a (somewhat) wild guess (well, not really wild - I am about 90% confident about the answer)...

    is it the type XXIII?

Correct! A Type XXIII, specifically U-2365.

I thought someone might get that one quickly (especially as Goose posted a recent thread about a Type XXIII wreck '))

    Your turn to ask NaKacu

These 2 EARLY german u-boats were commisioned as merchant submarines before seeing combat.

More or less... ;-) there is a "fine print" in the "seeing combat" statement.... therefore, let's go to the Bonus Answer: Disposition (fate) of each one...

So your question is "Name the two German ex-merchant U-boats and describe what happened to them"?
