I think I've got it.... The photo looks like the preserved U-995 (VII C/41) at Laboe, Germany.

Aplogies for keeping you all waiting, but I have been away with work and didn't have time to get onto the forum.

VG you are indeed correct. I had intended to do a piece by piece 'reveal' but you got it in one I haven't, but I know some forum members have been lucky enough to visit U-995 and there are photo threads around here. Over to you VG

    Here's the picture in full.

    Thanks RJ

The glimpse of a beach/dune in the background gave me the clue.

Nice idea for a question. I might try to do the same with my next one, which I'll research later...

Oops!! I found a question, put it in my 'U-boat quiz notebook', and forgot to post it. Sorry about that.

Allied ASW ships often reported that, at the climax of a submerged U-boat kill, there was a large underwater explosion - not caused directly by a depth charge. No-one knew for sure what caused these explosions until after the war.

What did the Royal Navy learn, during tests in 1947, about this phenomena?

That the explosion was the battery, becoming immersed in sea water and exploding in its compartments?

Geoff is probably right, but if not, I'll proffer that it was perhaps something to do with air pressure inside the boat?

Good guesses, but not right I'm afraid...

HINT - the RN's test disproved a common belief regarding the demise of submarines that go too deep...

Nice ideas for these last few questions, gentlemen. I'll take a stab, not based as yet on any "deep" thinking. Was the explosion caused by the detonaton of the torpedo warheads due to compression? I'll be very surprised if that is the answer.

Considering my answer, I wonder if the Royal Navy tests conducted in 1947 would have seen them loading armed torpedoes aboard?
