Le Vache Qui Rit - The Laughing Cow

U-69 commander Jost Metzler wanted the Bull of Scapa Flow (U-47) on his conning tower, nobody knew how it looked like, so instead they painted the laughing cow featured on the packaging of a cheese brand with the same name.

    New question, fairly easy:

This U-Boat commander was accused of taking Hitler to South America on his boat at the end of WW2.
Name the commander and the number of his boat.

Parrabellum is correct. I know you are fairly new here Parrabellum but we tend to wait for confirmation of the answer from the question setter in case they want to add anything further to the answer given and to quote their source before we post a new question.

Not to worry, onwards for now.

Sorry about that RJ, I promise it won't happen again!

G_G, correct answer, like I said, it was rather an easy one. They also set a record for longest time a U-Boat stayed submerged until that point, 66 days.

    Over to you!

    Thank you Parabellum

Although the question of the first US warship to be sunk by the Germans in WWII has been asked a couple of times before, what I would like to know is; what was the strategic result of this action?

    No worries Parabellum.

@ Goose - Is the answer that the convoy system used by the British was adopted by the US?

My guess is U.S. Navy ships were cleared to engage U-Boats even if war hadn't been declared formally between USA and Germany yet?

    Yes indeed you are correct!

Erich Topp's action heralded the beginning of an undeclared war at sea between the United States and Germany, and far closer co-operation between the USN and the Royal Navy with regards to convoy escorting.

    Back to you

Niiice! It was a long shot, but what the hey!

I'll try to come up with a new question until tomorrow afternoon, but if anyone else got a good one, fire away!

    ETA:

Ok,nobody posted yet, so here I go:

There were a few cases of U-Boats returning to base without their commander. Name at least two boats and the reason for the loss.
