I've been on the USS Nautilus and the USS Growler at the Intrepid museum. Never on a U-Boat, unfortunatly.

When I was about 10 or so I went on a Royal Navy nuclear sub in Cardiff, South Wales. I think it was an open day or something - too young to appreciate the visit though the only thing I remember was that the corridors were very narrow - even for a 10 year old!!

Back in 2003 while on vacation I went on the USS Growler at the Intrepid museum.

I was only on the USS Drum (SS-228) in S. Alabama next to the USS Alabama. Was going t go on a russian sub in San Deigo last summer but it was closed. Spent the day on the USS Midway. I live in the south west of the US and all the subs are on the east coast, Chicago or in Wisconsin. Did have a friend who went to see the Torsk and brought me a movie of it back. Am going to go see U-505 one day.

Hoo boy, am I old. All this talk about being on museums! And some of them were boats that were active when I was in the service.

Re: Even if I were shorter than 6'2''

I am 6' 4" tall and had to get a waiver. There were only two places on the ship where I could stand up straight.

    Was it HMS Alliance?

Not been there myself, but will pay her a visit next time I'm down in the south west. Did you happen to visit Bovington Tank Museum when you were in the area? I love that place!

I've been on HMCS Okanagan and HMCS Ojibwa, both Oberon Class diesel electrics. As a teenager with a father in the ship repair business in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I visited the USS Snake about 1967 and toured the ancient [@ 1948 vintage]HMS Acheron back in 1969. I have Acheron's crest in a trunk somewhere. It shows the Acheron, the wild bull of Greek lore, with the motto "Excreta tauri sapientam fulgeat," -- roughly translated, "BS baffles brains." You gotta love the RN!!!

I went on board our local French 'Daphne' class subs, and I was astounded by the complete lack of seperate watertight compartments throught out the whole sub. One leak and the whole lot goes down.

My immeadiate thoughts were... you'll never catch me on one of these 'coffins'
